Weekend wishlist: hygge for the home
Yay! It’s the weekend! It might be an unpopular opinion but I love chilly weather, dark evenings and swirling leaves, because it means snuggling in with a sleepy whippet, piles of soft blankets, scented candles, and maybe even a glass of something lovely. For this weekend’s wishlist, I thought I’d do a little roundup of all things hygge for your home, because let’s face it, who needs an excuse to snuggle?!
If you’re a regular here you’ll know that I’m obsessed with the Danish concept of hygge (pronounced hoo-ga) meaning cosiness, warmth, happiness and a sense of wellbeing. Now I’m not saying that hygge can’t exist in the summer, but it truly comes into its own once the nights have drawn in. That gorgeous feeling can be achieved in many ways, but I feel that there are a few hygge basics that will make your home feel super cosy:
Piles of blankets and soft rugs
For extra Scandi points, go for knitted blankets and throws, and don’t be afraid to layer. This chunky knit throw from Cox and Cox is definitely on my wishlist, but for a more affordable option, look at Wayfair who have this gorgeous knit throw in blush, charcoal or natural for just £23.99

Helpfully, Next have a whole cosy shop dedicated entirely to all things snuggly and hygge, including this incredible super soft fleece duvet cover and pillows - you’ll never want to get out of bed!

If you haven’t already, add a soft rug, especially if you have hard floors. It softens everything and adds a splash of colour. Mine is a Berber-style rug from La Redoute.
Scented candles
Scent is so inextricably linked with wellbeing - pick warm, comforting scents like this gorgeous Beauty Pie bitter orange and blackcurrant candle, with citrus, clove, nutmeg and chilli notes. Not a member? Click this link and you’ll get your first month free.

For a more festive scent that’s still super Scandi, The White Company’s fir tree candles scent the whole house with wintery green notes of pine, eucalyptus, cedar and moss, and look beautiful too.

Of course you’ll be needing hot chocolate to sip while you flick through that most hygge of books, Nigel Slater’s Christmas Chronicles, and I don’t think you need to look much further than House Doctor’s perfectly rustic mug (in fact, the entire set of mugs, plates and bowls is divine). The fir tree mug was M&S last year, but sadly they’re not reselling the range at the moment.

Comfort food
I think most of the dishes I really love to cook have quite an element of hygge about them: my absolute favourite self-care recipe (what? it’s a thing) is mushroom risotto - not only is it THE most comforting and soothing thing to cook, but it’s like a hug in a bowl to eat too. See also stew and dumplings, and anything topped with crumble.
The right gear for snuggling
For serious cosying up, we’re going to need to bring out the big guns: the supersoft joggers and matching wide jersey top from hush should do the trick. Or these supersoft ones from Next dotted with little twinkly stars. And don’t forget a pair of cashmere socks.

Et voila. Now all you need is to drape absolutely everything in sight in twinkly lights (my preference is for these teeny tiny copper ones from M&S) and you’re ready for a cosy weekend. x
