If you’ve been on Instagram recently, you’re bound to have seen all the home bloggers talking about River Island’s new homeware range. I’ll be honest, a lot of it is a bit, well, loud for me. In particular, some of the Baby Doll and Electric Opulence collections are a bit bright, although, as with all things for the home, I guess it’s about mixing them in with the things you already have rather than buying the entire Baby Doll range, which would probably be a bit pink, fluffy and headache-inducing. It’s a small collection, mainly featuring home accessories like candles, rugs, decorative items and cushions, but it seems really great quality. I was reading an article recently (I think it was Alex at The Frugality) discussing the lack of decent, affordable, stylish furniture, so this new homeware from River Island is a brilliant start. Let’s hope the range expands into bigger items before too long.
Although there are pieces in the other collections that I like, the New Nordic collection is much more my thing, with some more neutral pieces, interesting textures and a twist on Scandi chic. I’m seriously thinking of investing in this cream tufted geometric rug, which is 150 x 90cm and I think would look lovely just in front of my fireplace.
Or, actually, I love this large grey geometric diamond rug too – so much lovely texture!
I also thought that these wire basket tables with a white or blue lid look really interesting – great to bring a little style to a neglected corner. I had a look at these in store, and although they’re a little smaller than I imagined, they seem quite sturdy.
As you can imagine, there’s quite a lot of faux fur about – either brightly coloured, or leopard print. The leopard embroidered cushion (£35, black and white, top right) is lovely quality, and the cream faux fur ones (£35) that you can see here on the second shelf down, have a really interesting gold foil reverse. The smaller leopard ones to the right are £15 and lovely and soft too.
This blue tiger faux fur cushion really seems to be one of the hero pieces of the collection – I’ve seen it everywhere. It really is a great, fun item, perfect for a teenager’s bedroom and again, really good quality, and huge!
If you’re near one of the bigger stores, do pop in. The little bits and bobs like vases, platters, ornaments and candles are absolutely lovely, and I get the feeling that this orange and cedarwood one is going to be the scent of autumn for me. Delicious.
Homeware from River Island is in store and online now.
