Have you worked out your personal style? It’s a tough one. I think by now, in my mid-forties, I’ve kind of sorted out roughly what suits me and what doesn’t: I like a mostly minimalist style in a palette of grey, black and white, and I tend to stick to classic styles, with the odd bit of leopard thrown in for good measure. What if, though, you could have access to your own personal stylist? Would you be interested in maybe shaking up your look? I’d love to be braver, especially at Christmas! I was intrigued and delighted to be invited to try Tuesday from M&S, a new, free, personal styling service that aims to provide style inspiration (with no obligation to buy).
The process is really easy. When you first sign up for Tuesday (the name was chosen for the team as Tuesday is the day of the week that we’re most open to trying something new), you’re given a series of choices: whether you need help with your work wardrobe or your day to day outfits, how much help you need (a few outfits or a complete overhaul), and then you go on to answer questions about your lifestyle, age, colouring, height and body shape. So far, so easy. Next, you’re shown a series of different images showing different styles and you’re asked to choose which ones you’re drawn to (I chose minimal and understated), and then you can express your preferences for different prints/colours etc.
Next, you’re introduced to your stylist (yes, she’s a real person), and you’re asked to upload a head and shoulders picture. After a few days, my stylist, Alison, came back to me via email with a selection of pieces, plus a couple of ‘wild card’ pieces to push me out of my comfort zone. You’re able to browse your stylist’s choices, read her notes on why she’s chosen the pieces for you, see photos that she’s used to inspire her, and of course shop the items if you want to. You also have the ability to feed back to your stylist whether you love her choices or feel that certain pieces aren’t quite for you, and explain why.
I was surprised to receive a second set of choices around a month later with more choices with tips on how to incorporate them into my wardrobe and also including a party look too.
I loved this service. Rather than feeling that it was a ‘bot’, giving you a pre-selected bunch of choices, I really felt that Alison had really listened to what I was telling her and most of the choices made for me were items that I would definitely wear. I also really liked some of her wild card pieces, including this gorgeous fur gilet and appreciated her tips on how to style each piece.
Did I buy anything?
Yes! Encouraged by Alison to introduce a splash of red into my rather monochrome wardrobe, I was seduced by her festive pic featuring a midi skirt teamed with a soft, slouchy jumper and went for this gorgeous red velvet pleated skirt. Perfect for Christmas, and beyond, hopefully!
