Firstly, can I just say that the apostrophe issue with Father’s/Fathers/Fathers’ Day and Mother’s/Mothers/Mothers’ Day really niggles my inner pedant. Apparently the OFFICIAL term is Father’s Day, as the original meaning of the two days was to celebrate your own parent rather than parents in general. But… bah. Anyway… I’ve got some lovely ideas for your favourite dad this year, so whether he be chocoholic, alcoholic or shopaholic, I’ve found the perfect pressie!
Mainline Menswear sent me this lovely ‘pint of thanks’, featuring some of the brands that they stock (Armani, Lyle and Scott, Adidas Originals). It’s idea and though they don’t actually sell the entire sets, it would be a fantastic pressie idea to stuff a pint glass with some of Dad’s favourite things – socks, a t-shirt, maybe some sweets he likes…
Like me, Mr English likes both a full flavoured white, like Chardonnay and Viognier, and a nice rounded red. Tesco have got a lovely Kumala Colombard Chardonnay (£6.99) that’s got plenty of rich, tropical fruit – perfect for sipping in the sunshine, or if red’s more your Dad’s thing, try their Kumala Cabernet Shiraz – a lovely, soft rounded red with some spicy notes. Yum (Sainsbury’s £7.00). If you really want to splash out, Hardy’s have an AMAZING Pinot, Eileen Hardy Pinot Noir, which has those classice strawberry flavours we love so much and is gorgeously rich with a touch of sweetness. Phwoar ( hardyswines.com £34.99).
Another great wine idea is a subcription to Vinoa – it’s a great monthly subscription service where every month you get four little bottles of different wines to try, along with interactive tasting guides. If you love the wines you’ve tasted, you can buy them too. I tried the Southern Australia tasting box and was blown away by the wines, especially a frankly fantastic Shiraz from the Barossa Valley called Wallace by Ben Glaetzer. There’s even a special Fathers Day six month subscription priced at £59.90 including a £10 voucher for the Vinoa shop, or a three month subscription for £29.95.
Toblerone have released specially packaged, limited edition Champion Dad bars. For a limited time the bars will feature special ‘Champion Dad’ packaging (available now £4.99 for 400g).
And finally, if you’re stuck for inspiration, John Lewis have got a a whole section devoted to all sorts of lovely bits and bobs perfect for Father’s Day. I love these gardening-themed items.
