If you follow me on Instagram, you might have noticed a short video that I did for the Ultrasun #myskinis campaign. It’s a fab campaign, not gimicky or hyper hard-sell, but basically created to spread the word on choosing the correct sun protection for our particular skin type, and also about applying it properly. I did a little piece to camera, talking about my skin and also about a few new things I’d discovered during the campaign. This was filmed just after my Dad died and I’ll be honest, I was having a rotten time. The guys at Ultrasun were the sweetest, kindest, most understanding people during this time and I think it’s just made me love everything about Ultrasun even more.
Pale! And freckly, and I burn really easily. I’m also prone to getting patches of melasma (discolouration) in chunks across my forehead if I’m not really careful in the sun. I’m already a huge fan of Ultrasun, and use the Ultrasun SPF 30 Face tinted anti-ageing sun protection (or the SPF 50 in the summer or when I’m away) and I’ve also recently converted to the Sports Transparent Sun Protection Spray SPF50, which I pinched off the boys on holiday and now swear by – if you’re not a fan of rubbing in sun cream, this one is for you – it’s a clear, gel-like texture which is non sticky and goes on really quickly.
The Ultrasun #myskinis campaign really covers two main areas of awareness:
Choosing the correct sun protection
I think so many people struggle with this – there are so many factors (excuse the pun) when choosing sun protection: it can depend on your skin type, where you live (or where you’re travelling to) and how old you are. You can also benefit from some basic UVA/UVB info:
UVB rays cause burning and damage to the skin’s surface and the level of UVB protection is measured by the SPF level in your chosen sun protection product. The SPF level must be correctly matched to skin type and strength of the sun in the destination it is used.
UVA rays penetrate the skin’s surface and cause cell change, and a high UVA is key to the prevention of skin cancer. Everyone requires a product with a high UVA filter and with the different ways of measuring that level it can be confusing – it’s why Ultrasun just put the % filter level on the packaging. In the UK, a products protection from UVA is given a star rating of between one and five stars.
Applying sun products properly
It’s actually been proven that most people don’t apply enough sunscreen, and when you’re not doing it properly, you’re wasting your money and not protecting your skin. A rough guide to applying sun cream is that you need a minimum of six teaspoons to cover your body (so, say, half a teaspoon for each arm, a teaspoon for each leg. You also need to remember to apply your sunscreen before you head out into the sun, ideally around half an hour before sun exposure, as up to 60% of protection can be lost if applied in direct sunlight. Also, of course, you need to remember to reapply regularly, especially if you’ve been swimming (general note: read the instructions!!).
An early heads up for Wednesday’s Today’s Special Value on QVC
If you fancy giving Ultrasun a go, I’ve got a fab link for you. On 4th April, the Ultrasun 5 Piece Complete Sun Protection Collection will be featured as Today’s Special Value on QVC. If you click on the link now, you can dive in and get the products before everyone else is aware of the offer (apparently these things sell out really fast). The collections (there are two choices) feature five Ultrasun products: the Family SPF30, the Lip Protection SPF30, the After Sun Gel (which is utterly gorgeous, cooling and moisturising – and, I’ve discovered, really soothing on insect bites), then you can choose either the Ultrasun Glimmer SPF20 and Face SPF30 in the glimmer kit, or the Extreme Sun Protection SPF50+ and Face SPF50+ in the family kit option. Totally up to you.
Lastly… brand new products!
Ultrasun have literally just launched their brand new Daily Face Fluid SPF50+ Brightening & Anti-Pollution (£28). It’s a perfect everyday moisturiser, designed to protect the skin from UV, atmospheric and domestic (chemicals) environmental aggressors, which are particularly rife in urban areas largely due to increased traffic pollution. I’ve given it a go and it’s light and not at all greasy or white on the face too. I’m also loving the sound of this After Sun Tan Booster, which as all the benefits of Ultrasun’s lovely, cooling after sun lotion, with the added benefit of enhancing and extending your natural tan. I’m taking this away with me next week and will report back!
