Here goes, then, with my first Christmas gift guide of the season. I’m so excited! Get the Bublé on! And – bearing in mind my winter self care promises – I’m going to stay true to myself and say – here goes – Christmas pressies can be horrendous. Oh, come on now, we’ve all been there: ugly jumper that you’ve gone ‘oooh, lovely!’ and worn religiously even though you hate it because you didn’t want to upset the giver, useless gadgets that you never used and DVDs when you haven’t owned a player since you got Sky Cinema years ago. I say it every year, but even when we’re embracing our inner William Morrises – I’m paraphrasing here – and having (or giving) nothing that we don’t know to be useful or believe to be beautiful, we need to remember that our idea of beautiful might be different to someone else’s. I’ve come up with a few ways to overcome the gift dilemma and I’ve teamed up with M&S to give you my top picks. Here goes, then…
Scented candles and diffusers
You might be able to confound this theory (message me!) but I’m not sure I’ve ever met a person that didn’t like a scented candle. As far as I’m concerned, they’re the perfect pressie: thoughtful, stylish, festive (especially if you go for one of the special Christmas scents), and they’re such a feelgood present too – the gift of lighting up your room with twinkly, delicious-smelling loveliness. M&S have got a whole range of delicious home scents, but the clementine fragrance range is my absolute favourite, managing to be both festive and fresh at the same time. Also, they’re fab for gifting as the boxes are so nice. You don’t even have to wrap them. I love these mini diffusers too.
Now, you’ll know your giftee better than me, but if they love a bit of costume jewellery you can bet they’ll love a statement earring for the festive season. These velvet tassel drop earrings look so much more expensive than they are, and they’ve got a lovely swish to them too.
A luxe lingerie update
Again, I’m talking people you know well enough to have seen them in their pants here, but a velvety update on their usual style in a rich, festive colour has to be a winner, right? As long as you know their basic shape preference you can’t go far wrong. Love these velvet and lace ones, and this evergreen colour is gorgeous.
A bit of party sparkle
I’m not one for tons of elaborate makeup, but even I still go ‘ooooh!’ if I see a pretty palette. This one isn’t a load of money, but it looks luxurious and the colours are wearable, plus they all have a bit of a metallic shine to them, making them perfect for parties.
Mini beauty gifts
I love the idea of making up a little gift bag of things. I often do this, popping in little beauty bits, some sweet treats and a few bath fizzers. Choose items that people will actually use, like these cute lip balms, this Emma Hardie ‘merrily moringa’ gift set featuring a tiny version of the iconic cleansing balm along with a cleansing cloth, or this lovely little Leighton Denny Time Repair anti-ageing hand, nail and cuticle oil. This approach is perfect for secret santa pressies too.
Practical makes perfect
See what I did there? Know a dog walker whose gloves have seen better days? These faux shearling ones are soooo soft and warm. Or what about that person who loves a cuppa and is a sucker for a pretty mug? You can’t go wrong with a Christmassy one. And if in doubt? Ask! I’d much rather someone vaguely hinted at what they were going to get me rather than saddled me with something I was never going to use.
Okay, this one’s a bit of a risk and I would definitely just say ‘oh my goodness, I’ve seen something I’m sure you’re going to love, so… erm… how’s your champagne glass collection looking?’. Yes, you’ve kind of spoiled the surprise but if they’re battling on like we currently are, with a smash rate of approximately one per week (what? we drink a lot of Prosecco), they might be open to some new glassware and they’re never in a million years going to be expecting these beauties. I mean… look. All the heart eye emojis.
Plus, there are always chocolates (check for sugar free/vegan/whatever diets first), or plants – I love a nice succulent (matron), and you can never, ever go wrong with a beautiful bunch of flowers or a nice bottle of wine. I’d much rather have something I’m going to use and love. What about you? Have a wonderful weekend xx
