Literally as soon as I let my guard down, my old habits have slipped back in. Mr E and I noticed that our no wine on a school night rule had slowly reverted to a wine on every night rule, so we’ve got very firm with ourselves, and my must have breakfast every day rule has slipped again too (let’s skip the don’t eat biscuits with every cup of tea rule – I’m working on that one). Back on the horse, then, I’m concentrating on creating delicious, healthy breakfasts for myself every day, and I’ve got a couple of lovely new discoveries for you:
First up is Mesa Sunrise. It’s a very healthy cereal (gluten free too, if you need to worry about that). In fact, I think that’s why you might not recognise the name – it’s been hiding in the gluten free section at the supermarket and it really should come and show its pretty face to everyone. It’s a very tasty multigrain cereal with corn, flaxseed, buckwheat, quinoa, and amaranth (there’s quite a trend for ancient grains recently isn’t there?). I can’t tell you if there’s any scientific basis for this, but I actually find it’s very good at keeping me full up until lunchtime without giving me the weird hungry shakes I get a few hours after some other cereals. Not sure why that would be. Anyhoo, it’s delicious and you can find it in the usual places like supermarkets and health food stores priced £3.00. There’s more information at naturespath.co.uk.
Talking of ancient grains, last week I went to the British Museum for the launch of Kellogg’s new range of Ancient Legends cereals, granolas and mueslis. The spelt, cranberry, sultana and flax seed granola is my fave.
As well as having them just with milk, I made a Bircher muesli pot (top) with 45g of their puffed spelt, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, sultana and flax seed muesli, a pot of @yeovalley blueberry Bio Live yogurt, a grated Pink Lady apple and a splash of cranberry juice. Mix and chill overnight or for at least two hours. It’s absolutely delicious.
Lastly, if you’re mad about coconut water, how about CHOCOLATE coconut water. Vita Coco now comes in a chocolate flavour – think a Bounty in a glass – this stuff has got all us all addicted. For a quick breakfast, it’s absolutely divine whizzed up in a blender with a banana. So quick and seriously yummy. You heard it here first!
