What on earth is up with this weather? Last week, we were convinced that spring had sprung and I was walking the dog in shorts and a t-shirt, and now I’m looking out the window and it’s that proper April rain shower/sunny spell combo weather again. It’s a lot chillier too. This is brilliant for all of us who love nothing more than chatting about the weather (yes, I’m talking about you, Mr E), but not so good if you’re trying to plan your outfit for a day in town or an evening out. At home I’m not bothered because I live in my standard uniform of jeans and trainers (wellies and parkas for walkies), but I’ve got a couple of things in the pipeline that are going to need me to look smart and then what do I do? For this weekend’s wishlist, I’ve been doing a bit of research at one of my favourite retailers and I’ve come up with some ideas for spring dressing with M&S, who are knocking it out of the park at the moment, fashion-wise.
I find coat planning at this time of year really difficult – the slightly milder temperature means that the parka is too much, but the likelihood is that if you head out for the day it could still be chilly and/or rain too. I’ve always resisted buying a mac as I didn’t think they suited me but a friend of mine has this printed trench and she always looks effortlessly cool in it.
Oh, and of course you’re going to need a cute umbrella. I love this black print one, and it folds small enough to pop into your handbag too:
When it’s a bit nippy or rainy, I do tend to revert back to the jeans and a nice top rule. I thought this lace insert long sleeved blouse looked really unusual and I love the piping detail, but it also maybe looks a tiny bit short in the body, so I feel I need to try it on:
See also, this v-neck long sleeve blouse which looks gorge – I love the nearly-off-the-shoulder neckline and the wrap/tie thing at the waist. but there’s no picture of someone wearing it, so again I think I’d need to try it on:
Also, how do we feel about loose, wide leg trousers? Being slightly wide of bum, I’m not sure they’d really suit me, but I’m really drawn to a couple of pairs, especially these ones (I know, terrifying floral print, but honestly, look at them in the video – they look gorge). I feel like they might be good transition wear, as they cover your whole leg, but they still have a bit of a floaty, summery feel:
I’m also strangely drawn to this drawcord swing dress – another one to try on, I think, but perfect for a day out if you’re not sure what the weather is going to be doing as you could pop a denim jacket or trench over the top and the look is really chic. It does possibly have the potential to make you look really wide though, so I’d have to see.
And then when the sun finally does show its face, there are plenty of lovely options for spring dressing with M&S. I kind of like this sweet little printed jumpsuit (although it’s possibly a bit of a man repeller, I got a firm ‘urgh’ from Mr E on this one):
And last but not least, who could resist this cute straw bag. I’m picturing myself heading to the market in the sunshine to fill it full of fresh flowers. Oh look, and there’s that effortless black sundress again…
