Last week my oldest baby celebrated his birthday. We decided to get everyone together and have a little birthday celebration for him, and I thought it would be a great opportunity to try out the new M&S summer food to order range that I’ve been hearing so much about. If you’re having a get-together it’s such a lovely idea. You can choose from all sorts of different food, from fabulous barbecue food (the ribs look amazing), to dinner party fare, afternoon tea and you can even say I do in style with wedding drinks, flowers and, of course, wedding cakes too. You just order online and then pick up from your nearest store. Everything is neatly packaged and labelled and the lovely staff at Berkhamsted M&S even put it all in the car for me.
I tried to get a good mix of different flavours, with some fresh, bright salads and also – important if there’s alcohol involved – some more substantial bits like the baby posh dogs (always a favourite with us) called posh puppies, and mini ultimate cheeseburgers. The fizz was on special at just £5 a bottle.
I loved the fact that the salads are all packed separately, ready for you to dress and toss together when you’re ready (no soggy rocket here) and the portion sizes were generous too . I went for an Italian pasta salad (£15), with tomatoes, rocket, Parmigiano Reggiano, pine kernels and a red wine vinegar and shallot dressing, plus a delicious sweet potato salad (£15) with spiced roasted sweet potatoes, roasted onions and peppers, pumpkin seed and spring onion salad, a chipotle vinaigrette, and a buttermilk and soured cream dressing. I’ll definitely be recreating the dish at home.
The mini posh puppies (24 for £8) don’t come with the little buns, but I picked those up in store. I actually ordered far too many, but we ate them for dinner the next day. The mini ultimate cheese burgers (20 for £14) come complete with buns, little squares of Cornish Cove cheddar and a delicious smokehouse ketchup. I didn’t think I’d need 20 but they all disappeared.
The party mini wrap slices are fab for easy finger food and come with a few different fillings, including Mexican Three Bean, hoisin duck, chicken and bacon Caesar, chicken fajita and Piri Piri chicken.
I’d ordered a huge profiterole dessert (£15) with layers of chocolate mousse which seemed to go on forever, but right at the last minute, I decided to make him a birthday cake after all (recipe coming soon!) so the lucky birthday boy got two enormous chocolate desserts to plough through. Oh, and I bought some fruit skewers (£10) as well, for colour and a healthy treat, just in case anyone didn’t fancy a heavy dessert (they all did, but who can blame them?).
I have to say, everything was completely delicious and I’ll definitely be using the service again. If there was one negative, it was the amount of packaging, but the majority of it was recyclable. The stars of the show for us were the mini ultimate cheeseburgers, the sweet potato salad and the ridiculously rich and delicious profiterole dessert. If you fancy giving the Summer Food to Order a try, you can currently use the voucher code 5OFF when ordering to receive £5 off when you spend £35 on Food to Order (ends on the 17th May). Enjoy!
