I’ve mentioned before that I’m completely obsessed with the concept of hygge (n): a Danish word that conveys domestic cosiness and warmth. As far as I’m concerned, once the temperature drops, the idea of cosiness and a feeling of wellbeing is exactly what we all need. I find a bit of nesting – which usually involves PJs, a favourite book and some frothy hot chocolate – really comforting. Happily, the lovely chaps at M&S let me loose in their home department to choose a few essentials that will bring fragrance, comfort and candlelight to your home, to put you in the perfect frame of mind for Christmas.
Christmas, to me, can be instantly summoned with the whiff of a festive fragrance: warm cinnamon, buttery vanilla shortcake, pine needles, the smell of snow on a crisp morning (you know that smell, right? It’s like no other), zesty clementine and woodsmoke. I’ve already mentioned the M&S Clementine range, which is completely gorgeous (and a great choice if you’re not a fan of the more traditional Christmas scents), but I’m also slight addicted to the winter apple and spice diffuser (which when placed in your downstairs loo, subtly scents your whole house – trust me). Check out the whole festive home fragrance collection here.
I’m almost disappointed when it becomes too warm in the spring to light candles every evening. Now the clocks have gone back, you’ll find me lighting candles in most of the occupied rooms in the house – something fresh in the kitchen, and something more warm and cosy, like the winter spiced apple candle in the lounge. To give a bit of height, I love to use pillar candles. I originally bought this wooden pillar candle holder intending to spray paint it copper, because I loved the shape but was looking for a metallic one, but I’ve come to like its simplicity. And this simple grey tray is perfect for tea and toast in bed as well as candles and twinkly lights).
Comfort and cosiness
To create a feeling of cosiness (and to snuggle under while you’re watching a festive film), you need the softest blanket. This pompom throw is my absolute favourite – bought a while ago, it wasn’t cheap, but it’s been washed loads and always looks lovely and feels really soft. We also have several of the teddy fleece throws dotted around, which are super soft (and also protect the furniture from muddy dog paws). The fir free mug has a simple, Scandi feel to it – perfect for hot chocolate.
Oh and were this whole feeling to be bundled up into a book, it would of course be Nigel Slater’s wonderfully comforting and evocative Christmas hug of a book, The Christmas Chronicles, which, if you haven’t yet, you absolutely must read. It’s every gorgeous memory of Christmas, wrapped up with Nigel’s own stories and recipes – a delight that will leave you full of festive warmth.
Wishing you a cosy weekend xx
