I remember one of our very first holidays – to St Lucia – Sam was about three and Charlie was about 9 months old. Little Sam’s legs were just the perfect length to make sure every time he moved, he kicked the seat in front of him. As much as I tried to get him to sit still or distract him, the poor lady in front eventually turned round and gave me a right earful – leaving me in tears. Luckily, things have moved on from those days and you’re more likely now to have a lot more gadgets and technology to keep the kids diverted and make family travel much more stress free than it was 15 years ago (and maybe even encounter some more sympathetic fellow travellers!)
Here are my top five fabulous new travel ideas:
On the Movies backpacks
This clever new range of backpacks (above) feature a 7” touchscreen 8GB tablet. The tablet slots in to a transparent pocket on the front of the bag so you don’t even have to remove it for the kids to use it – so handy when travelling! It comes pre-loaded with games and you can download film on the tablet too. They even come with charger and earphones and are available in four different designs. £89.95 from www.onthemovies.co.uk, suitable for 3-8 years.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar neck support
This cute little Very Hungry Caterpillar neck support is such a great idea when you’re travelling with toddlers and they need to nod off in a comfortable position. It’s really soft and comfy too. £9.99 from Amazon.
Cheeky Rascals auto-shade
If you’re planning on driving abroad, either in a taxi or hiring a car, these fantastic Outlook auto-shades fit straight over the car door a little bit like a stretchy sock. They cover the whole window and protect your little passenger from UV light and glare. Even better, if there’s no air conditioning, you can still open the window. What a great idea.
Goodness Gracious pouches
Goodness Gracious Foods have just brought out a new, 100% organic, gluten and dairy free range of pouches that are perfect for travelling. You can stick a load in your suitcase and be sure that you’ve got yummy food for the kids to eat. They’re great for day trips too.
With flavours like mango, coconut milk and brown rice (babies 12 months and over) and apple, apricot and cinnamon (4 months and older) the pouches are sold in Planet Organic and other independent London retailers and are also available online from goodnessgraciousfoods.com.
How about you, have you discovered anything that’s made family travel easier for you?
