Zero: a greyhound. Only smaller.

Zero 003     Zero 005

So here, as promised, is little Zero.  As I said the other day, lovely Irene down the road runs a doggy rescue centre.  She does all the work herself and when Zero was rehomed, then returned in disgrace after scoffing her new owner’s chickens (can you blame her?!), Irene wondered if she could stay with us just for a little while until there’s room, or a new home could be found, or until Jen works her magic with her greyhound contacts.  She’s a bit thin, hence the name, a bit bald, but very sweet.  She runs a mile every time anyone so much as sneezes, and she’s fast enamouring herself with Bert as she treats him like a god, lying on the floor while he’s on the sofa, and letting him go first down the stairs.  The slippy floors are a bit of an issue (greyhound holiday on ice if she gets a bit of speed up) but she’s adapting to being in a house, and already knows not to get up on the sofas (they’re Bert-only sofas).  The first night, we started her off in the kitchen, but loud crashing noises as she cleared everything off every work surface (well it smelt nice.  She knows not to get up there now) and pitiful crying and wailing meant that we had to have a rethink.  Seeing as she’s completely trustworthy in the house (aren’t greyhounds amazing?  Never been inside a house in her life, and already she understands that the toilet is outside – maybe it’s the fact that she has Bert to teach her), we let her sleep on the landing with Bert last night, and she loved it.  Nodded straight off, no worries.

She loved Bert’s squeaky kitty  toy as well (he ignores it, or very occasionally uses it as a pillow), and had a lovely play with it:

The cutest thing is that she’s really chatty.  When she sits down she goes ‘gruuuuummmmppphhhh’, and if she’s got an itchy ear, she makes a kind of ‘oh yeah, right there, that’s the spot’ growly noise which is adorable.  She makes little squeaky, talky noises when you talk to her too.  Bless.

All this makes me wonder why greyhounds get such bad press.  They’re the laziest rug-monsters ever, and so gentle too.  Want one?

Ooooooh she’s devine. The husband is badgering me to get another dog to keep our little Patterdale company. Would Zero eat our cat though or does she only like chicken??!!!

  2. Susan says:

Oh look at her wee white toesies. I’d love another dog but our Jack doesn’t play well with others (he just thinks he does), and all our friends have too many dogs already if they have any at all.

But, will keep thinking—she’s a cutie!

  3. Baino says:

Everytime I see your lovely hounds I lament my bro’s decision to allow Black Teddy to be put down after his failed racing career. She’s gorgeous. I’d have her if she’d stand the flight and the six month quarantine! I need something to control the mighty wabbits. Labradors just dont cut the mustard despite their best efforts!

  4. SUSAN B says:

She’s a cutie, alright! She reminds me of my “failed foster” girl, Gracie which is why I asked how old she is. Gracie’s 11 and I understand they tend to get skinny when they age. I have a heck-uv-a-time keeping a decent weight on her so she doesn’t look like a skeleton! Good to hear Zeo’s getting along with His Bertiliciousness! Can you cat test her for Jennifer? Sounds like that would be ideal but I have a feeling you MIGHT just have a “failed foster” on your hands too!! hahahaha

  5. English Mum says:

Jenn: Hmmm, good question. She’s definitely a chaser, but I suppose it depends how hard your cat is! I know there are ways to introduce cats and greyhounds, but I know for certain that Bert would never be cat-friendly.

Susan: Isn’t she? I was telling Jen today that she so deserves a nice home as she’s just so good in the house. What a waste for her to be in a kennel when she should be snuggled up on someone’s sofa (just not Bert’s)!

Baino: Ooh, and I bet she’d be a great rabbiter too. She adores the sheep – the two of them rush from window to window when they’re on the move. Ridiculous really :)

  6. English Mum says:

Susan: I’m standing firm on this being a foster only agreement. Only because Bert’s so spoiled and if we start letting her rule the roost too there’ll be no room for us! Not sure about the cat testing thing – I bet Jenny would know though.

  7. Moon says:

Does she have a passport ?

  8. ooooooooooo so so cute!!! are you sure you can’t keep her yourself??? I’d love her but we’re gone 12 hours a day so it just wouldn’t be fair!

  9. Daily Spud says:

Cute as anything. I’d love to get a dog someday but for now I have that same “away from the house for 10-12 hours a day” problem…

  10. Taffy's Mum says:

What a cutie and so cheeky to boot :D
I would love to take her in but I think OH would have a purple fit if I brought home another one.

As for squeaky toys – William is the master at demolishing them and then pulling all the stuffing out – poor Taffy, he has had no toys to play with since William moved in (not that he ever played with them!)

  11. Glitterkitty says:

aawwwww! what a cutie! and a keeper, perhaps?
she just sounds so dotey *sigh* i’m anyone’s for a bit of fur!
whatever happens, she’s def getting a lovely home with you for now, EM

  12. Jennifer (Bert's No 1 Fan!) says:

I was trying to convince my folks last night to take her but no joy!!

  13. English Mum says:

    Moon: DHL?

Rach: Ohhh it’s tempting, but it’s just everything times two: two lots of poo to clean up from the garden, two loads of food to buy,two big gangly dorises trying to get in your bed in the morning…and it’s not as thought they’re small, either!

  14. English Mum says:

Spudness: I know, they’re such a big commitment. I can go down to Dublin shopping, spend the day and Bert’s absolutely fine, but then he’s huge and has the bladder of an elephant – bit different for her, I bet.

TM: I think you’re excused, having two already! Aren’t they funny with the toys? Zero’s rounded up all Bert’s discarded toys and has them all in her bed. She’s even nicked the rubber hippo out of the bathroom!

Glitter! How’s you? Yes she’s a sweetie. She has the softest neck, and I have a feeling that with some feeding up and grooming, her fur will grow back lovely. She has the potential to be sooo pretty x

  15. Taffy's Mum says:

EM – William did that too. He also takes all the toys out of the basket then sleeps on the other bed so when Taffy tries to lie down he looks most disgusted at all the toys in his way

Do you think the two of them could be related?!!

  16. Shiv says:

She looks gorgeous. I bet you won’t be able to let her go. Our boy “Shadow” has been with us for 4 years now and we were only going to look after him for 2 days. Black greyhounds and lurchers all have a tendency to look a bit bald – their coats are so fine and their skin shows through. Bert probably loves having someone around to adore him and to talk his language. Girls are usually much more eager to please than the boys, so she would probably be less trouble than Bert.

  17. Kate says:

Got one thanks!!! And the cat too – she did chase him until Max found his courage and biffed her on the nose – no more chasing… she daren’t even look at him now! Zero is a little beauty x

  18. English Mum says:

TM: Separated at birth. Bert saves his most withering looks for anyone that attempts to get him to play. :)

Shiv: Aw, he made himself indispensible! Erm, not really, but I think her issues are general not being used to houses stuff that comes with a bit of training, like learning not to lick the stuff in the dishwasher, or jump up and put her paws on the kitchen worksurface/trying to take food out of people’s mouths, etc. Bert’s always unconscious on the sofa so he’s generally no trouble!!!

Kate: Isn’t she? You’re right, I think it depends on the cat. Next door’s is ancient and Bert views her as a potential hors d’oeuvre x

  19. Townygirl says:

i’ve already decided that my next pooch will be a greyhound . . only thing is my furry baby, i mean dog is only 2 . . . sigh. I’m working on boyf but he keeps saying “no, you’re bad enough with one, there’ll be no room for me on the bed if we have two.” Don’t see the problem myself!!!
    Zero is beautiful.

  20. English Mum says:

Towny: She IS, but I see his point: last night I watched CSI with Madame lying across my feet, and Bert levered in between me and Hubby on the sofa. Hubby had paws up his nose at one stage, and I had evil breath being funneled into my face :)

  21. nuttycow says:

    Yes. I want one. *sob*

  22. Ruth E says:

Hey, Zero looks adorable! A wee sweetheart – I hope she gets a home soon.

Congrats on your nomination – got my fingers crossed for ya

  23. English Mum says:

Hey Ruth! So do I! She seems to be getting her feet under the table here.. Oh and thanks, same to you – well deserved xx
