ENGLISH MUM IN THE PRESS

Wisteria and chickens

Wow it’s been beautiful, hasn’t it?  We’re really starting to feel at home in this house now (well I am, the kids were settled pretty much straight away).  Here at English Towers II our little garden is actually a bit of a revelation, what with the gorgeous Wisteria that’s emerging, draping itself over the wrought iron arch that leads to the vegetable patch and the greenhouse:

As you can see, I’m still working on that vegetable patch, hence the weeds, but I’ve planted some peas:

…and a little herb border:

…and underneath all those weeds and nettles, I was delighted to find old strawberry plants and raspberries already there, both of which are happily flowering.  This, it seems, is the benefit of inheriting a garden off an older person – it may be slightly overgrown, but there are treasures just waiting to be discovered:

…like this beautiful old lilac tree which leans, like the Wisteria over the ancient brick garage:

What’s the old saying? You plant Magnolia for your children and Wisteria for your grandchildren?  I have no idea how old this beauty is, but walking under its blooms to potter in the little greenhouse has become one of my nightly pleasures.  And then, after plenty of swearing, I put together the chicken ark (the more eagle-eyed amongst you will notice that at this stage I had forgotten to slide the little door into place and had to take the whole bloody thing apart again):

and yesterday we picked up our chickens, a beautiful, lavender coloured Bluebelle and a white Sussex Star (and look at the Wisteria now, just a couple of days after the first shot):

My only concern is that they haven’t been introduced to the Ninja Cat of Death yet, but seeing as she’s still quite small, I’m hoping they’ll keep her in her place.  Still, as with all things in my life, it has the potential to go horribly wrong.  I’ll keep you informed…

Beautiful chooks! Well done for building the ark all by yourself! I’m very impressed. Wisteria is a beautiful climber :)

    • English Mum says:

Thanks Toria. It was a bit annoying because the pre-drilled holes were all in the wrong place! Isn’t it gorgeous? Must have been here for ages – shame it’s not nearer the house, really x

  2. We’ve a ninja cat too….jealous as hell of anyone else and ignored anything she deems beneath her!! She’s gotten big aswell in the photo! Cute kitty!

Garden looks fab……as do the chickens!

  3. Erica says:

Amazing garden! You got luck there. Mine still looks awful, I’m so crap at it.

You should come up for a gardening holiday ;)

  4. Very nice, Becky. How come you have sun? It’s completely grey here. Hope the Ninja Cat of Death is not too interested in the chickens. :0

Oooh! Jealous!! I love Wisteria and have only just planted a Mag. I guess these treasures will have to wait for the gradbabbies to enjoy!

I’m hoping for my rose garden this autumn. The little ‘rooms’ in the garden are growing (hedges, really) and in the orchardy bit, the trees were just drooping with blossoms! Hurrah!

I know that Sweetie lurks here (He was MOST complimentary on the Figleaves shoot, the big Perv) so I’ll type this with feeling…

    I WANT A DOG!!!!

    Thank you. I’m done! :)

    • English Mum says:

Oh god, you mean he saw me in a bikini? Kill me now! Can’t wait to see your lovely garden, Jen – you must send me pics!

And Colin, get the poor girl a dog. She’s at home all day FFS!

  6. Am inspired to get out and do my new garden but oh no it’s raining ( hard ). Clucking jealous of your chucks, hen.

    • English Mum says:

You should get some, Mrs W, they’re close to the perfect pet! They’re quite cuddly too (yay!). Oh, apart from the poo (boo). But you get eggs (yay!)

Ooh yes, haven’t seen your new garden yet – will we get photos? xx

  7. Poppy's Mum says:

Glad to see you got your mojo back in the garden! Hard to resist in this weather!

    • English Mum says:

I think that’s the trouble, PM, I’m a fair weather gardener, and really I suppose you need to be a bit more committed. Ah well xx

  8. C says:

    off topic question…
I’m attempting baking cupcakes (buns!)this evening – I have the hummingbird bakery cookbook, is it any good??!

  9. I’m so so jealous of the wisteria. Our garden was inherited from an elderly couple so we have pears, apples, blueberries, gooseberries… but we’re a bit lazy at harvesting. Still the birds and the foxes eat well. How lovely it will be to have freshly laid eggs for breakfast. Hope there’s no foxes near you though!

    • English Mum says:

So do I Liz, but I’m locking them up securely every evening just in case. Would love some fruit trees – not really any room though x

  10. That all looks very idyllic, in an admirably real way. I’m worried that you may not miss us any more…

  11. TheMadHouse says:

Looks like a fantastic garden, very envious of the chick, we cant have any – no pigs or chickens on the deeds

  12. Baino says:

I’d love a garden small enough and fenced! If I kept chooks here the ninja foxes would have them for breakfast . . literally!

    • English Mum says:

We were much the same back in Cavan, Baino – had to fence them in one particular spot and make sure they were shut away… Hopefully mine will be alright here x

  13. Priness_L_88 says:

I swear you are living my dream! The garden is beautiful.

  14. mary says:

Once upon a time my gorgeous tom-cat Athelston terrorised our chickens by hiding in the daffodils and pouncing out on them.
One morning when I opened up the coop he sprang out in a state of shock, I’d locked him in with them!

    • English Mum says:

      Hi Mary, hope you’re well!

Oh no! Poor Athelston (that’s a great cat name, by the way). I wonder if it cured him of his chicken worrying?!

Ninja got a good hard peck on the head when she got too close today – I think she might also be cured! xx

  15. Daily Spud says:

I’ve just been in my parents place admiring my Mum’s wisteria – a delightful thing to be sure. Hope your chickens will be very happy in their new home!

  16. Paula says:

It’s all looking gorgeous Bex, we inherited a well stocked garden too but sadly, 3 years later, it’s pretty much given in to the triffids and nettles….maybe if I had a chicken or two they’d eat the weeds?!

    Pxx

    • English Mum says:

Mine seem to be intent on eating all my new pea and runner bean seedlings! I’m not much of a gardener really – I’m ok if it’s sunny- in the winter it’ll be nettle central again, I’m sure xx

  17. moon says:

    Love the kitty cat ….

so, will you come over here and help us with our small garden too… you seem to enjoy it … also, come collect these damn chickens !

  18. TheGlutton says:

Love wisteria… can’t grown anything here in our garden due to constant gale-force atlantic winds – so I am very envious :)

Good luck with the chickies. The lavender is a fab colour. And love NCoD looks very cute too.

    • English Mum says:

Thank you my darling. We used to have the same problem in Cavan – even our greenhouse blew away. And don’t let NCoD fool you – she is thoroughly evil and practically uncuddlable (is that a word?) xx
