I would probably be what you would call a ‘conservative dresser’. If you’re a regular reader, you’ll know that I favour classic wardrobe staples: simple shift dresses, dark denim, a crisp white shirt and black knitwear. But it’s Christmas! This season, even if you’re not a party animal, everyone needs a little laid back luxe in their life, and I’m loving the stylish winter florals at John Lewis. There’s a touch of the Bohemian about it: rich, jewel tones, soft velvet, a little sparkle, a hint of embroidery, dark toned florals… all things that tempt me to step out of my comfort zone. Here are my top picks:
The investment dress
I’m a huge fan of the statement dress. They’re so easy, you’re guaranteed to look ‘together’, and they perfectly transition from season to season with different accessories. For a Christmas gathering, or a New Year’s Eve party, I think you can really go to town. This Che dress from L K Bennett is, admittedly, an investment piece (if you’re going to invest, though, do it now – it’s currently reduced from £450 to £315), but oh, it’s beautiful: soft, midnight velvet, beautiful embroidery and a chic, fluid shape. Just pull it on and you’re ready to go. Love, love, love!
Not one for a dress? Have you considered a jumpsuit? They have all of the easy, breezy, ‘chuck it on and you’re done’ benefits, while being just a bit different. I love the gorgeous, rich colour and the flattering, swishy wide leg style of this Finery jumpsuit (if you feel too exposed in the cami top, may I suggest a black cashmere roll neck?). Also in the sale, reduced from £119 to £83. Also, how gorge would this be for holiday evenings?
A touch of sparkle
You might, of course, need a tiny bag, just for lipstick, keys and phone. I’m not overly keen on a clutch – I find them awkward: forever transitioning from hand to under my arm and back to hand (especially relevant if your other hand is balancing your champagne), so I love the delicate chain strap on this John Lewis capri clutch. And look at that detail!
If you love the detail on this one, but would prefer a simple clutch style to hold, I love this tassel clutch from AND/OR (in fact, I more or less love everything from AND/OR right now) – it’s got all of the gorgeous embroidery and folksy detailing, minus the strap.
The finishing touches
If you can’t walk in heels (or you want to dance the night away), may I suggest the flat slipper? They’re SO chic! Also, everyone knows that leopard is a neutral, right? These Sam Edelman mule slippers look gorgeously comfy and are reduced from £119 to £70 – also, check out the heel!
I also love these kitten heel beauties – can you imagine that pointy toe just peeping out from under the swishy legs of the Finery jumpsuit? Heaven, and also available in a divine, muted purply red colour. I’m also thinking how nice these would be with skinny black jeans and a sparkly top.
And finally, talking of skinny jeans – shall we just take a moment to appreciate possibly the most beautiful boots in the world, ever? These Dune block heeled ankle boots are a joy to walk in and embody everything gorgeous about the winter florals edit. Plus, they’re reduced from £120 to just £60! Bag a pair while they’re still available in all sizes. I’ve been teaming them with my fave Levi’s 712 high waisted skinnies (top – my one concession to festive dressing, a coloured version of my favourite jeans: the colourway is called Malbec). Just gorgeous.
