ENGLISH MUM IN THE PRESS

The ‘oh no, everyone’s watching’ dance.

So what’s your favourite sloppy one, then?  What would you like your Hubby (or bride, natch – we’re not sexist here at English Towers) to whirl you around the dance floor to?  Or if you’re already married, what was your ‘first dance’ song?  I think I’d probably favour this beautiful one from the Cranberries, or maybe ‘If you’re not the one’ by Daniel Bedingfield.

I know.  I’m a romantic sap.

  1. I leave that up to the missus. Not that I’m not romantic, just my taste in music tends to run to the more angry variety. Not sure “Everything Zen” would go down well with the other half.

  2. Baino says:

Ha! Our bridal waltz (if you can call it that) was Stevie Wonder’s “You Are the Sunshine of my Life” . . .’and I’ll always be a-r-o-u-nd’
    He was such a fibber!

  3. Deborah says:

    Aw!!!

Ours was Clapton’s “Wonderful Tonight”. I wanted Bob Seeger’s “Mainstreet” since we met on Mainstreet and lives there for awhile, but I was vetoed! :)

Baino- My Dad & I danced to that one! The one I wanted, “Butterfly Kisses” made him want to gouge his eyes out! :)

  4. English Mum says:

Thrifty: You not married, then? Or do you just not remember what you danced to? Ooh, video was a bit scary – my kids would love it. Is that Gavin Rossdale who’s married to Gwen Stefani? Looks like him.

Baino: Awwwww… I’m sure he meant it at the time! I love Stevie Wonder x

Deborah: Oh yes, Wonderful Tonight’s a great one. Again, the sprogs would approve – they think Clapton’s a ‘ledge’!!

  5. Wee Jen says:

It was ‘My Baby Just Cares for Me’. Chosen for the lovely sentiment and the fact that it was nice and short, thus minimising embarassment on the dancefloor. Except the band had different plans and extended it because they clearly felt that we weren’t red-faced enough yet. So we kept dancing and wondering when the bloody thing would stop!

We walked back down the aisle as man and wife to ‘Bring me Sunshine’. That still makes me chuckle.

  6. Natalie says:

You may want to laugh, perhaps not the tea out your nose kind but…our song was Bad Company by Bad Company…what does that say! But a brilliant love song to listen to is The Promise by Tracy Chapman – do yourself a favour and look it up! Also EM, i am waiting for you to do your birthday song on my blog, there is a link to a site on my post called OH…check it out you might want to put it on your blog as it is kinda fun.

  7. English Mum says:

Wee One: God, isn’t My Baby Just Cares for Me a bit bouncy? Did you have to jig about?! Oh and you made me laugh out loud at the Bring me Sunshine bit. Excellent!!

Nats: Oh that’s fab. Can I steal it? Can I? Can I? x

  8. That’s the man. Wedding, hmm, the wife picked something, I think it might have involved that squeaky twat from Boyzone, can’t even remember his name at this stage.

  9. Natalie says:

KNEW you would like it!!! Steal away!

  10. Wee Jen says:

More kind of a gentle bop and a ‘Oh god, why didn’t we work something out properly’ shuffle around the floor!

My friend did a lovely choreographed dance at her wedding to ‘Let There Be Love’ by Nat King Cole. Nothing fancy but they’d obviously put a bit of effort in. Unlike us!

  11. Jennifer (President of The Bert Fan Club). says:

Ours was Billy Joel, Don’t Go Changing…we just shuffled around in a circle! My other half really has two left feet.

Seriously, if he dances it’s like he’s having a fit. His instructions if we’re going out is this: move either your feet or your arms BUT NOT BOTH!!!

  12. Keating! Ronan Keating, that’s the fella. Twat.

  13. English Mum says:

Thrifty: ‘the wife picked something’ oh you old romantic, you!! Ronan Keating.

Nats: Ta. Trying to find UK #1 lists as we speak!

Wee One: Classic! Have you seen those ones on YouTube when the whole wedding party break into a pre-choreographed version of Michael Jackson’s Thriller on the dance floor? Awesome!

    Thrifty: Yeh. Twat.

  14. Taffy's Mum says:

    EM/Nats – my birthdate no 1′s were:

Long haired lover from Liverpool – Jimmy Osmond -UK

M& Mrs Jones – Billy Paul – USA

Ben – Michael Jackson – Australia

As for the romantic first dance song – there isn’t one that stands out for me – guess that is another reason for OH not getting me down the aisle yet ;)

  15. I still have a bottle of mead with a dribble left in the fridge, so the honeymoon aint over yet! (according to my interpretation of the tradition)

  16. Ruth E says:

Our first dance was Someone Like You by Van Morrisson.

    Love that cranberries song!

  17. Tara says:

Can’t go wrong with Otis Redding or Van Morrison. These Arms of Mine or Sweet Thing would be my choice.

  18. Tara says:

No, I just changed my mind. Maybe Van Morrison’s Tupelo Honey. He is from Ireland, so it works…

  19. English Mum says:

TM: I love that Me and Mrs Jones – is that the jazzy kind of song?

Thrifty: Eh? Must be some Irish thing?

    Ruth: Ah, Van Morrison. Perfect!

Tara: Yeh, I can see Sweet Thing. Or what about some soulful Luther Vandross. I always dreamt of my Dad whirling me round the dance floor to ‘Dance With My Father’. Unlikely to happen now he’s partly made of titanium!!

  20. Taffy's Mum says:

Thrifty – what is the mead thing for weddings? Do you think someone is trying to tell me something cos I won a bottle of English Mead on the tombola at our local Greyhound track open day 2 weeks ago :P

  21. tina says:

I love that Daniel Bedingfield song – it’s beeeeeautiful!
Ours was Vonda Shepherd’s cover of ‘I only wanna be with you’. I really wanted us to take dance lessons and do the ‘you’re the one that I want’ dance from Grease, i thought that would’ve been fun, but my husband has two left feet so had to go for something really slow…

  22. English Mum says:

Tina: Me too. And Vonda Shepherd!! Me and Hubby used to LOVE Ally McBeal. I played that album to death x

  23. English Mum says:

Jenn: I’ve taken to patrolling my spam filter for your comments now! Ooh, Billy Joel. I always felt sorry for him when ol’ Christie Whatserface towered over the top of him. Ah, epileptic dancing – witnessed plenty of that in my time!! x
