The Friday Photo: the Englishes invade Mayo and Galway

So this is exciting.  Yesterday, Hubby took us on a really exciting trip.  We went all the way to Galway, and then to Mayo, for lunch at the beautiful Ashford Castle.  The place is absolutely stunning, as you can see from my unusually passable photography.

We felt like total celebs, and even the €75 it cost us for two rounds of sandwiches, two kids portions of chicken and chips and four cokes did nothing to dent our excitement (yes okay, so it’s hardly cordon bleu but we didn’t dare order anything decent – we can’t afford to remortgage).  Anyhoo, it was worth it, just to have a nose round this magical place.  If you ever get the chance, get yourself booked in.  Just remember your gold card!

  1. Noice! We have been invited to a wedding here in Feb, so we probably will be re-mortgaging.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!!!!….tee hee hee, sorry couldn’t resist! :)

What a lovely treat EM, haver never been, looks amazing.

Thrift – wow! I think I would have to remortgage just to buy a dress to wear to that place!!

  3. Kate says:

It looks beautiful – hope the butties were as nice!!! :-)

Thrifty: wow that looks nice. If it’s anything like our trip to Faithlegg House back in August, it cost us 275 quid for a family room for one night!!!!

Jenn: Bugger off. Yep that Markree Castle looks amazing. It’s Sligo isn’t it? x

Kate: Actually, they were tiny, and the kids got about four chips each. Still, I’m sure they were ‘gourmet’ chips.

So who paid for the helicopter in the first shot! No wonder you had little left for lunch! On a serious note, this is what I miss . .the history of Europe, right on your doorstep. The best we have is an old fort in the middle of the harbour because they actually thought the Russians were coming! Pfft! As if they could stand the weather!

  6. Susan says:

Wow, sounds like a lovely day out!
We’re going to Mayo next month too, to Knock: won’t be half so grand but I’ll have enough holy water and rosary beads to last the year.
    :-P

So HOW were the sandwiches, and what was the service and presentation like? Next time, don’t forget to give us photos of the ladies’. (I do love nice ‘facilities’, can’t help it…)

Baino: A freebie – perks of the job. Ah, it is absolutely beautiful – and amazing inside. Bah, I’d suffer the weather – it snowed this morning!

Susan: The sarnies were little thin fingers of white bread – crusts off. We got about 6 each and they were things like smoked salmon and cream cheese. The boys had a really nice, moist breast of chicken plus some teeny matchstick home-made chips. Perfectly okay, but not 75 quid’s worth, I’m afraid. The bathrooms were lovely – nice lavender liquid soap and hand cream!!! Hubby and I were saying that it’s all very old fashionedy inside, but they’ve managed to keep it from looking stuffy. We ate on huge great puffy sofas, and yes, the service was polite and unobtrusive, as one would expect!! x

  8. Mary says:

When we were children we used to cycle there and fish coins out of the fountain so we could buy some ice cream !
I had dinner there with my family when I was very young, too young to appreciate it, but I remember it was friday so we had to have fish!, That should tell you how long ago that was.
It’s much posher now I think.

  9. Michael Lee says:

And I’m guesssing the whole of Ireland was abuzz about their victory over Australia in International Rules?

No, didn’t think so, by the way, was the chicken gold plated?

  10. I just saw this place on an Aussie travel show – looked goregous, and they also showed something about a dude with a hawk there, the tv presenter had it land on her arm. Beautiful scenery – sounds like a great day out and about. :)

  11. English Mum says:

Mary: No way! You lived there? What a beautiful place to grow up x

Michael: Er no. It was mentioned briefly on the sports pages. Let’s face it, it’s just an excuse for an on-pitch fist fight anyway! And no, not even a sprinkling of gold leaf. Stingy eh?

Aussie: Ooh yes, they do all that erm… hawkery, no, hang on I can get this… falconry there. They have a school apparently. Yes, gorgeous place xx

  12. Jay says:

Wow! You flew there? Stunning photo! And yes, it does look gorgeous. I keep promising myself we’ll get over to Ireland sometime soon.

Trouble is, the reason it’s so pretty and green is the rain, right? LOL!

  13. English Mum says:

Jay: Absolutely. Pretty much non-stop this year so far! When my Disreputable Dad came over, he said that it’s so green over here it’s almost luminous. Still, worth a visit though x

  14. Tara says:

I really want to come along next time.
