We all know that feeling, right? After a gorgeous holiday, the last day is such a massive come-down: you’ve got to be out of your room by midday but your flight doesn’t leave until the evening, you don’t want to get sandy and have nowhere to shower, so your last day is spent miserably killing time, sweating in your travel clothes, before heading home. While I was in beautiful Barbados, though, Virgin announced a brand new concept that’s going to change all that, and I think you’re going to love it. Step forward The Departure Beach from Virgin.
I don’t think you can beat Barbados as a holiday destination. My fabulous Caribbean choir experience was my second trip and I loved it even more than the first time round. We had time to really explore this glorious, sunny island, eating dinner right on the beach at The Lonestar (Simon Cowell’s favourite); discovering beautiful Gibbes Beach: a gorgeous bay of soft sand, clear blue sea, scuttling crabs and swaying palms accessed by a tiny, scrubby little pathway hidden between two very posh villas; swimming in the pouring rain with turtles, and nibbling pumpkin fritters and coconut shrimp while sipping a Banks beer at The Roundhouse, perched above the wild and beautiful coastline of Bathsheba on the east coast. And I still feel like I still haven’t experienced everything this beautiful island has to offer.
Virgin’s brand new facility, the first of its kind, is due to open in May 2018 with construction commencing shortly on Brownes Beach in Barbados and will enable us to embrace our last day and enjoy every last minute of our holiday before we have to head home. The Departure Beach will feature a gorgeous beach (clue’s in the title), a private air-conditioned lounge, kids’ gaming area, free Wi-Fi, luxury bathroom and showering facilities, plus a beach-friendly bar and restaurant.
If the artist’s impressions are anything to go by, it looks like it’s going to be a really fab way to laze away your last day, swimming in the gorgeous, clear water or lazing on the beach sipping a cocktail.
How it works
It sounds like it’s going to be really easy to book as well – just add The Departure Beach to your booking at any point prior to your holiday. Then Virgin Holidays will pick you up from your hotel (or cruise) after breakfast and whisk your hold luggage straight to the airport so you don’t have to worry about it any more. Then just check in – and chill out! I think it’s such a good idea, especially when you think that from a 10 day holiday, that last day equates to a 10th of your total holiday time – and that’s precious, right?
When you arrive at The Departure Beach, you can take advantage of all the facilities, grab a free lunch and relax. When it’s finally time for your flight, Virgin Holidays will make sure you get your transfer in plenty of time to get to the airport for your flight, with the transfer included in the price of admission.
Entry is complimentary for any customers staying at Savannah Beach in Barbados or those on a cruise booked with Virgin Holidays that terminates in Barbados. Other customers can add The Departure Beach to their booking for an opening promotional price of £20 per adult and £15 per child.
