Okay, so as far as I’m concerned, it’s definitely autumn now. Regular readers will know I’m an absolute autumn obsessive. I always think of it as a time of new beginnings. It’s a ‘new notebook month’, not just because of the new term connotations, but because it’s maybe a time when we retreat indoors a bit more, giving us time to reflect, take stock (see my positive life plan if you’re interested in exploring this a bit more) and to welcome a bit of softness and comfort, even – dare I say it, more joy – into our lives. Autumn is snuggly jumpers, soft throws, cushions and flickering candles (and let’s not even get started on comfort food, shall we?). The change to cooler weather also brings the opportunity for a bit of a wardrobe refresh – retiring our summer pieces and exploring new collections from lots of our favourite brands, and – wow – the M&S autumn winter 2017 collection has so many nice things – I’ve taken you through a few of my favourites.
I think in fashion terms, M & S have recognised the definite blurring of the lines between smart and casual, coining the phrase ‘modern lifewear’ to reflect the fact that all of us are increasingly wanting clothes that are versatile: smart and stylish yet still really comfortable (as usual, we consumers are a demanding bunch).
New ‘lounge bra’ collection
God, the amount of conversations I have with friends about uncomfortable underwear (hands up how many people chuck off their bra as soon as they get in). It’s really not surprising, then, that we’re finding we’re spending more and more time in our gym wear – why? Because it’s comfortable! If I could wear a sports bra all day every day I would (and often do when I’m at home). The challenge is to find underwear that’s as comfortable as the sports bra, and looks good under our clothes.
M&S have launched their new Lounge Bra collection, featuring non-padded and non-wired bras, as well as bralets and longline bras, blending the femininity and feel of traditional lingerie with the comfort of active wear. I’ll definitely be ordering this non-wired ‘athleisure’ lace lounge plunge bra, which promises comfort, femininity, and a great plunge shape that isn’t going to show under your clothes. Gorgeous.
I love this pretty bralet too:
This lace plunge bra is underwired, but if you’re a bit larger in the bust department, you might want that extra bit of support and shape, and it’s still really pretty with a bralet look about it:
Of course, we all want some gorgeous knitwear in our perfect autumn winter wardrobe and this M&S Limited Edition cable knit round neck jumper doesn’t disappoint. I love this wonderful warm ochre yellow, which features heavily (in dresses, tops and knitwear):
I saw this ribbed polo in store today and it’s soooo soft – in a range of gorgeous colours too. It’s an absolute autumn winter staple: perfect for layering and just so effortlessly stylish. I’ll definitely be buying a black one (and I’m tempted by the khaki as well – such a bargain price too). This colour is dark gold. Gorgeous on a brunette:
Opulent, embroidered boots are everywhere at the moment, and M & S have some really gorgeous ones to choose from. If you’re a fan of the all over brocade, look no further than these block heeled beauts:
A little bit more subtle (and dare I say wearable?) are these similarly shaped block heel embroidered ankle boots:
I never thought I’d fall for a flatform (indeed, never thought I’d write that sentence), but oh, these shiny brogues – especially in that glorious oxblood colour. Aren’t they amazing?
Floral dresses are still mega popular. I saw this floral print long sleeved swing dress in store today (it looks black, rather than blue) and it’s super soft. It looks absolutely gorgeous in this shot with these cute little boots, and as it gets colder, it would be fab with some thick tights too. Lush.
Still on the subject of florals, then, as well as some beautiful, rich prints, there are some absolutely delicious textures too. You really need to go in store and run your hands over some of the stuff to see what I mean (and yes, admittedly you might get some funny looks). I fell in love with this fabulous pyjama-style 3/4 sleeve floral shirt in a lovely, silky finish:
And on first look, I thought I didn’t like this velvet floral print maxi dress, but having seen it on a couple of people on Instagram, it’s really growing on me:
I mean, honestly, I could go on and on – there are so many lovely things. You can shop all new M&S autumn winter 2017 pieces here.
