Last week I headed up to London in the sunshine to do a little messing about in boats. I always feel that I don’t really go to London enough – from our local train station it takes a little over half an hour to get into Euston, and unlike some of my unluckier friends, our service provider, London Midland, is really excellent: on time, clean and efficient. In a happy coincidence, it was also Afternoon Tea Week (I know, who knew that was a thing?) and I made my way to London Bridge pier to hop on board and enjoy a rather delicious afternoon tea with MBNA Thames Clippers.
We were welcomed on board one of the newest members of the fleet, Neptune Clipper, and very sleek and shiny it is too. Inside, I was really surprised by how luxurious it is. Think first class carriage rather than 1980s underground train. I think Thames Clippers predominantly run a commuter service (I was chatting to a friend who uses the service every day to get to work and she says it’s an absolute joy, rain or shine, to take these lovely boats to work) and they run services into central London from something like 20 different piers all across London, from Woolwich in the east to Putney in the west. It’s also a very lovely way to explore if you’re headed up to London for the day.
For an extra treat, you can book a traditional cream tea and a glass of champers to enjoy in the rather luxurious lounge area, while a blue badge guide points out the landmarks and gives you a bit of history about our capital city. We were lucky that it was an absolutely fabulous day and with the sun glinting off the water, we whooshed by the Houses of Parliament, Tower Bridge and The London Eye.
I’d highly recommend it if you’re considering what to do with your final couple of weeks of school holidays – kids would love it. Prices start from £16.90 for the cream tea and sightseeing cruise (you can upgrade to a glass of Champagne if you like). Many thanks to MBNA Thames Clippers for a really lovely afternoon!
