English Mum’s Fresh Bread Bakeoff

So recently I showed you my simple recipe for  easy step by step bread.  I had a lot of comments from people saying they’d quite like to have a go – so now’s your chance!  The newest, shiniest bakeoff is here – and it’s all about fresh bread!  What do you fancy baking?  A nice crusty loaf?  Some shiny conker-brown bagels?  Sticky buns?

The Rules

As usual, we laugh in the face of rules.  As long as you actually bake something bready, take a picture and send it to me (with a link if you have a website), you’re in.

Photos need to be emailed to me at: english [dot] towers [at] gmail [dot] com, with a brief note saying what your bakey masterpiece is and how you’d like to be credited.

Entries must be received by midnight on Feb 14th, St Valentine’s Day.

Cheating

As usual, a bit of healthy rule-breaking is to be embraced and any creative wavering from the theme will be acceptable.  As long as there’s a suitably waffly and entertaining reason why, I’ll let you off.

The Techy Stuff

If you’re a blogger, please link back to this post, and if you’re a tweeter, please use the hashtag #freshbreadbakeoff. If you’re neither, then just ignore this bit completely.

The Prize

The lovely chaps at Marriage’s Millers (www.flour.co.uk) have very kindly offered to provide a prize of a range of their fabulous quality flours, plus some scrapers, so you can bake bread like a pro!  The entries will be displayed in one enormous blog post (this bit causes a total hysterical meltdown in my non-technical brain, but don’t worry, I’ll get over it).

The Judge

The fabulous Hannah Marriage knows absolutely everything there is to know about flour, bread and baking and has foolishly agreed to be the judge.  All bribes and dodgy approaches to be made directly and not via this blog.  The judge’s decision is final.

So that’s it, then.  You’ve got loads of time, plenty of inspiration, and some very ambiguous rules.  Let’s get baking bread!

Bread is such a great idea! Is it open to us Irishers too?

  3. Melanie says:

Oooh.. may give it a go then….

  4. You are so good at this sort of thing. Love your rules. Wish I could cook. Might get 10 y/o to enter and pretend it’s mine….Lx

  5. Jules says:

I absolutely love this idea!! I love baking and my brain is now clunking into gear to come up with something yum for this! :)

  6. Sarah says:

Ooooh I think I’m gonna have to do this one!

  7. nuttycow says:

Ooo, bread. What a good idea (plus I’ve found a great place to proof it).

Hm… what am I going to bake?

  8. Laura says:

Now where did I put that recipe for Cycling Helmet Bread?

  9. Jennifer Eccles says:

Gonna see if I can get Mr Eccles to enter this one…really just so I can eat it! Nom nom ;)

  10. I am SO in! I am brilliant at baking cakes and biscuits and all manner of other things that are supposed to be hard to make. But when it comes to bread I am a total failure. I’ve have tried numerous recipes, different brands and have had no success whatsoever. I’m going to check out your original recipe and follow it to the letter – wish me luck!

    • English Mum says:

Good luck! I find I rush everything with bread, so the trick (with me) is to really take my time: kneading, proving, and even not taking it out of the oven too early!

  11. Foodie Mummy says:

Oh might give this a go! Sounds fun!

  12. I always say I’m going to enter comps on blogs then end up not doing so. Will definitely enter this one, I love making bread!

  13. Just been making plans for this – can I confirm it’s 50 GRAMS of oil? Do you put the jug on the scales and weigh it? And what brand / type of yeast do you use? I see fast action, quick, fresh and other things and I’m totally overwhelmed by it all. I can see you use marriages flour, but what yeast do you recommend?

    • English Mum says:

Yes, I’ve got those scales that you can zero after you’ve put the jug on – otherwise weigh the jug first then add 50g! Yes, I use fast action yeast – usually Allinson’s or Tesco’s own x

  14. You do put together a good comp Mrs! Clearly need to get myself into kneading bread this weekend and I guess it’s going to have to be homemade and not from the bread maker.

  15. [...] This recipe is a softer dough than I usually use for pizzas – it puffs up more when baked and is all fluffy and delicious. It’s a little more hassle than regular pizza, but not alot. And it’s nice to have a change  Most importantly, this is my entry to English Mum’s Fresh Bread Bakeoff! [...]

After much consultation with the boy here is our entry in to the Fresh Bread Bake Off http://gluttonyforbeginners.wordpress.com/2010/06/09/garlic-dough-balls

These are my son’s absolute favourite – if I ask him what special dinner he would like these always feature.

Oh and EM I have to say thank you – after seeing your fresh bread recipe I reduced the flour quantity in mine and it works much better – a lighter easier dough to knead, so thanks for that x

    • English Mum says:

Oh that’s brilliant news! Thanks so much for letting me know…

That pic is absolutely amazing, by the way – I was thinking it would make a great pic for a kitchen wall!

  17. Dear English Mum
I am totally gutted, I made some wonderful heart shaped pizza’s with fresh dough (my first ever attempt) especially for your Bake Off and am having major issues my blogging platform which won’t allow me to include photos or links! I don’t think I will get my entry in to your bread contest but good luck to everyone who entered!! Ren x

  18. [...] it really was easy and definitely one I will be using again and again. I am also entering this into English Mum’s Fresh bread Bakeoff, so if you fancy baking some bread pop on over and let the Queen of blogging know. Hasta luego [...]
