I’m off to Universal Studios in Orlando tomorrow to experience their incredible holiday celebrations, including Grinchmas, which I’m especially excited about (I’m going to interview the Grinch!). Unlike most regular travellers, I actually don’t really mind flying, especially when it’s Virgin Atlantic, and as a tireless plotter and planner, I adore packing and getting ready to fly.
One of my favourite fashion bloggers, Alex at The Frugality, recently recommended some very soft wool joggers from Gap which she rightly said would be perfect for flying. I ordered them over the weekend (40% off! Thank you Alex for the code) and they’re really lovely – as soft as cashmere and really comfortable. It got me thinking about the perfect outfit for flying long haul.
I’m not a fan of big, baggy joggers, but these are fitted and look a bit smarter, plus they’re mega soft and keep their shape. The key to dressing for a flight is layering. Sometimes when you first get on the plane it can be absolutely boiling, but then later on, they turn the air conditioning up and it can be freezing. You also have to bear in mind that if you’re travelling to a hot country, you want to be able to be comfortable at the airport the other end too, so I tend to start with a long sleeved t-shirt. I love Boden’s basics for these – especially the longer fit ones as they’re lightweight and wash really well. Their long-sleeved Breton is the perfect classic base layer:
Then you can add either a soft, flannel shirt like this one from hush:
… or I’m a sucker for soft, drapey cardigan like this Religion one from Topshop:
For shoes, I’m currently obsessed with these Berni Mev Verona pumps These woven shoes are massive in the US at the moment and they’re so comfortable because they’ve got a ridiculously luxurious leather memory foam insole. Also, the breathable woven material allows them to expand and contract with your feet, which obviously makes them perfect for air travel (and walking miles around theme parks, which is another reason I’ll be wearing them):
Add a pair of fluffy socks to pop on when you’re on the plane and top your outfit off with a nice soft scarf like this plain herringbone one that can double as a blanket if you fancy a nap, and you’re good to go!
Stay tuned for more updates from the other side, including THAT chat with the Grinch!
