Every year when it’s coming up to Christmas, we have the same old conversation about whether we’d go away and spend it somewhere else. We’re generally divided. The boys aren’t so keen, but I’d love to spend Christmas somewhere cool (sometimes we just need to break out and do something a bit different). Here’s my pick of five AMAZING destinations I’d love to visit over the festive period. So, pack your bags, book your flight cheaper with Hotels.com deals, and give your family something unique this Christmas – the whole wide world!
Prague, Czech Republic
Beautiful Prague is well worth considering as a possible place to spend Christmas. The fabulous capital city of the Czech Republic boasts beautiful architecture, including some incredible looking bridges and the proper wintery spirit of Christmas. Walk down the historic Nerudova Street in Mala Strana to view the city’s Gothic and Baroque architecture, or catch an opera or ballet at the State Opera or National Theatre. You can visit the holiday markets in Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square for a bit of festive cheer too.
How could I mention Christmas holidays away without including the capital city of Christmas! Lapland, in the deep North of Finland will make you feel like you are holidaying in the land of Santa Claus himself. This is the perfect getaway with kids: you can traverse the frosty landscape via a reindeer-pulled sled, go cross-country skiing on the Saariselkä trails and, more importantly, meet the real Santa!
Venice is always beautiful, but I personally think it’s extra gorgeous during during Christmas time. With the masses of tourists long gone, service is relaxed and friendly, and at night, you may have the moonlit Piazza San Marco all to yourself. This is just perfect for a romantic getaway. Sigh…
Fancy Christmas in the sun? Bali is well loved by tourists and for good reason: during summertime, you can enjoy the heat, the gorgeous beaches and the warm water, but in winter, instead of traditional Christmas carols, you can listen to the haunting sounds of the gamelan gong while you admire the Christmas Eve sunset at the island temple of Tanah Lot. Sounds magical doesn’t it? Even better, Bali is super welcoming and family-friendly. So the kids will love it as much as you do!
If you’re considering something completely different, this little Baltic country is one to consider. Riga is actually the birthplace of the decorated Christmas tree, so it makes sense to go and see how the experts do it. You’ll be dazzled by the twinkling trees on every corner. It’s a truly festive getaway, with ice skating, outdoor concerts and all the spectacular lights. Prices in Latvia are favourable compared to the UK so your money goes further too.
What about you? Tempted to get away?
