ROTFL!!! Hysterical! We come home sometimes and find the sofa pillows in the shape of a nest…and warm. Poor Marty. After 5 years of strictly forbidding him onto our bed, these last few days he comes up for a brief (2 minute) snuggle in the morning. The dogs are slowly taking over the world! You didn’t know that? Your dog is splendid by the way!

    • English Mum says:

Hey Jamie. Hs IS lovely but he has issues (which we’ve probably given him) in that he thinks he owns the place. We’re actually looking for a new home for him but nothing so far. Let’s hope his new owner is better at dog training than I am

  2. Claire says:

Love it. That’s one chilled out doggy :)

  3. toria says:

    bad dog! lol
if he is anything like blue, (who is also not allowed on the sofas) I bet he thinks that snuggly throw is just for him to cuddle in to and stink up. I would chuck the bertster off,put fluffy throw on the floor in a bunched up nest shape, point at it and sternly say to bertie ‘now get on your bed’, you never know! he might just do it lol see if that works and if it does get a less fluffy ‘berts bed’ style throw for the sofa lol

Benny, my new Slovak dog isn’t even allowed into the house !!.. not one paw over the threshold .. however, since I have been here, he is getting a little brave and will try to get his paws into our place.. and sneak forward, breaks my heart to send him back out …

    • English Mum says:

Awww, poor goggy. Is he like a proper Irish outside dog, then? Kennel and all that?

      • moon says:

poor What ….. unless you are still taking the piss out of my sausage fingers ?? … he does have a kind of kennel, under the stairs … but he does seem to like some cuddles from me .. I’m his favourite you know x

  5. Awh he looks so dejected!! Poor Bert!! Our cats are the same, they’re not supposed to be in the bedroom but don’t you knwo they always are!!

    • English Mum says:

Hehe. I had a friend once whose two cats were not allowed in the bedroom. One day she left the door open and BOTH cats did a big poo on her duvet. I think they might have been trying to tell her something…

      • That happened with my mothers, once he got locked inside for a whole weekend when she was away and he pooed between the sofa cushions (and he must have been on the curry and beer the night before) and the second time it was on the duvet!! Now she’s got no cat………..

  6. Perhaps if you gave him a peice of cake he would get off the sofa?

  7. Townygirl says:

ahhh, bless him. pupster is the same. i let him up on the couch but when we have visitors i regret it. he glares at them from the floor and i just know he’s annoyed that they’re in “his” seat.
i agree with Jamie, they are taking over the world.xx

    • English Mum says:

It’s true! When Mad Uncle Ali was over, he got ‘the glare’ from Bert, who eventually decided he’d just climb up on top of him – and that’s a lot of dog to have on your lap!

  8. jill says:

A little consistency would not go astray, I think. Are you going to spoil Bert, or not? You can’t leave him on the sofa one minute, just because he looks cute, and banish him to kennels the next minute, just because you want to go away for aay or two.

    • English Mum says:

I don’t leave him on the sofa, Jill, he’s told to get down. And what would you rather I do with him, leave him tied up by a roadside somewhere while I go away? What a strange comment!

  9. june in florida says:

Is that a new couch or just a different one, i really liked your other one and i think Bert did too.

    • moon says:

I thought that, but having been to English Towers, it’s the kids room I think, where they cocoon themselves in for 14 hrs straight… Computers games and the like .. emerging to eat and to take the piss out of their aging Uncle !

  10. Coastal Aussie says:

I am so soft. I’ve encouraged my dog to hop up on the couch because for a while there he put on a bit of weight and I thought that having him on the sofa would save him from arthritis in the future. He’s losing the extra podge now, but isn’t in a hurry to hop down to the floor. :) Hugs to all. xxxxx

  11. Baino says:

You know, you might be able to train him . .all he needs is to know that he isn’t the alpha male anymore. What about baby gates to give him limited inside access without feeling left out. If you can put him in his place, he might be less aggressive. It’s all about leading the pack . .

    • English Mum says:

You’re right Baino – he’s much better since we’ve been consistent and stopped him access to the bedrooms and the sofas. He’s been fine since – ’tis a learning curve with them isn’t it x

  12. notSupermum says:

Great photo. We have a greyhound, Tess, and she loves the armchair. If someone is sitting in it she will do a little bark to let them know she wants to sit there…..(she doesn’t get anyone to move though!).

    Gorgeous dogs aren’t they?

  13. Toria says:

What? ‘Banish’ to the kennels? Ie a doggy hotel? ( blue says lucky sod) are dog owners not allowed a weekend away then? My last weekend away consisted of the dog going to my aunts, my kids split up and sent seperately to my sister and other aunt and the chickens quails etc with my bro in law. Oooh I must be a bad parent/ dog/ chicken/ quail/ rat owner for having some time off and planning and making sure all needs were catered for . Maybe I should have left them all home alone? I’m away again at the end of the month I might just try it…. Not! Lol

  14. Arhonda Bend says:

    What a beautiful dog!
I have to say we’re not very strict with our mutt who is allowed up on sofa, cushions and beds galore. Not such a great idea when the weather has been so wet lately. But they’re part of the family really……aren’t they? :)

  15. [...] October saw The Death Wish Child learn that it’s probably not politically correct to put disabled people in a stew, English Grandma popping over for a birthday visit and some rum and raisin brownies, but shortly afterwards Hubby was offered a job in the UK and went off to work there.  I think in my heart I knew that the boys and I wouldn’t be happy without him for long, and in November, we packed up our wonderful Irish home and headed back to Hertfordshire, waving a sad goodbye to our friends in Ireland, our lovely chickens, and Bert the greyhound.
