A shining star of wonderful gorgeousness

The Friday photo: Un-wabbit welated gardening update

Okay, so the rabbits haven’t eaten everything, although I’m really disappointed that they ate the tiny shoots of the plants that my Ma and I planted (what were they Ma?  Dahlias and something?) as I really fancy having a few more flowers in the garden.  One teeny new shoot has just peeked out again (see the little bed by the patio, left of top pic) so I’ve covered it in a cloche to see if it will reappear.

Still, the carrots are recovering well after their surprise early haircut.  Here’s the raised bed, where you can see at the back that the fennel is enormous (and very cuddly – everyone stops to give it a hug) again, as are the chives and thyme, also at the back next to the remaining potatoes, and that my weird green pointy cauliflower things are doing well (netted area, far left).  Next along, inside the fleecy area are some cabbages, then two rows of carrots, and to the front you can just see the two strawberry plants peeking over the fleece:

:June garden left

Here’s the middle.  A bit of overlap as you can see the carrots in the fleecy bit first, but then there’s two rows of spring onions, another row of cabbages, then a fleece area containing the purple sprouting broccoli – my monster rhubarb is at the back there:

June garden middle

And to the right of the bed is the weird, bushy area where #2 ripped open a random bag of blue flower seeds and they went everywhere, next to some more chives and a few marigolds and red salvias planted for colour.  As you can see, the remaining potatoes not stricken by the dreaded Blackleg (arrrr) are still thriving, thank goodness.  Oh and that purple thing in the front is a flower with purple spikes but I can’t remember the name:

June garden right

Not a bad effort eh?  In fact, I might go so far as to say English Towers: 1, Rabbits: 0.

Heh.

That all looks awfully complicated involving effort.

    Next time hire Elmer Fudd.

  2. Jennifer (Bert's No 1 Fan!) says:

Looking good :) Your fennell is AMAZING! Did you just plant that this year? Isn’t it mad how everything has suddenly bloomed over the last few weeks, our garden has really blossomed. Carrots are still doing well, but I think maybe too restricted in the pots, the tomato plants are shooting up and the apple mint is outta control.

  3. Laura Driver says:

No Bert reclining on a chaise longue then?
I’d love to hug your fennel.
    (I am turning into Linda)

  4. Wow cool!! If you have too many veggies you know where to send them…………………

  5. English Mum says:

Maxi: I am the laziest gardener in the world. It’s not that hard, honestly. And I can’t wait to actually pick something that I grew (and no, I don’t mean bogies) x

Jenn: No, it was from last year. Amazingly, people have told us that it’s difficult to grow, but it obviously just likes it’s little spot there as it’s like a triffid! Ooh, I’d like some apple mint – we had chocolate mint in our last house – made lovely tea!

Laura: Erm no. He’s all photoed out. And you can hug my fennel any time (cough) x

    Rach: You’re always welcome!

  6. Growup says:

Good job. Any joy on the chili?

  7. English Mum says:

Growup: No. It’s really healthy, with loads of flowers, but they just keep dying and falling off and no chillis. I’ve left it outside loads but it hasn’t made any difference. Do you think it needs another chilli friend to swap..erm…stuff with?

  8. Kate says:

Looking good there!!! I tried growing carrot once – the tops looked good but the carrots were full of wire worm – I didn’t bother again!
And where is Bert? He’s usually around………

  9. Moon says:

Right, this is an official boycott of this site …

WHERE THE F**K IS BERT ?!?!?!?!?

  10. English Mum says:

Kate: Mine last year were a little pornographic, which caused a good few hilarious Sunday lunches, but otherwise unscathed. He’s up on my Bed displaying his bits and bobs to the world, as usual. Need you ask?! x

  11. English Mum says:

Moon: Gimma a break. All the hound does is sleep. I mean, how can I produce some kind of meaningful Friday photo if every week it’s a picture of Bert sleeping? I’ve run out of inspiration!!

  12. Moon says:

Not good enough .. you promise your readers a Friday picture of Bert … promises are promises ….

    BERT ! BERT ! BERT ! BERT ! BERT !

  13. Very impressive. My potatoes already have blight, which is a bit worrying as it is only June.

  14. jennynib says:

Moon, have you any drawing pins?

Can’t get the Damn placard to stick to the posts for this official industrial action thingy…

Oi!! Missus!!! Friday means Bert! With or without arty porno pose, we don’t mind!

Loverly veggies by the way – will be picking your brains when I see you next! I’m up to my bum in Mulch myself, but for trees, not veggies. Will try my hand next year, mebbees…

  15. English Mum says:

Trouble is, Moon, if I put up a picture now your comments won’t make sense and everyone will think you’re silly. We wouldn’t want that would we? Or….

MM: Why thanks. Yes, I thought ours was blight at first – it’s suppose to be quite rare with earlies. Did you find the spray? And if you use it I wonder if you can still use the tatties? Ooh, they’re like our babies aren’t they! x

Jen: Oh Madame Bandwagon-Jumper-onner. Right, that’s it, I’m going to take a pic of him right here and put it up. You’ll be sorry *shakes fist*

Bert with guitar looking wistfully out of window

  16. Jennifer (Bert's No 1 Fan!) says:

Jesus has Bert grown???!!! He looks HUGE!

  17. English Mum says:

Jenn: I know, he’s a whopper… He’s lost his winter fluff so he’s looking a bit less teddy-bearish too. Do you know he’s 30″ high from shoulder to floor? No wonder he hogs all the bed! x

  18. Growup says:

I think it must need a second plant for hot pollen based action. Well you live and learn I guess. I’d give you one, a plant I mean, but I didn’t grow any this year. Sorry.

  19. june in florida says:

He does look huge but then we don’t often see him standing up.I’m with Moon, it ain’t Friday without Bert.

  20. Moon says:

He is a big boy …

Happier now, me and Mrs M appreciate the effort ….

5 stars, industrial action over …

  21. jennynib says:

    Of course he’s tall! He’s 85% leg!!

Shame about the strike, I was practising my version of ‘We Shall Overcome’.. ah, well…

Loverly pic, by the way!! :)

  22. Daily Spud says:

That’s a fine plot you’ve got there EM and glad to hear that you’re winning in the battle against them critters. Meanwhile, I think I need some cuddly fennel in my garden!

  23. Kate says:

Nice photo – we have just measured our Hippie Chick – she is a mere midget – only 25 inches floor to shoulder.
Bert height is to the top of Hippies head when she is sitting down!!!!

There’s still no room on the settee though! x

  24. Moon says:

    Power to the Commenters !!!!

  25. English Mum says:

Growup: I have another one, which is teeny, and doesn’t seem to want to grow at all. Still, I’m holding out hope as it’s still alive…

June: Exactly, it’s because whenever you see him he’s upside down! x

Moon: You’re so welcome. He’s definitely in your bed in September now.

Spudness: Oh you do, it’s amazing in salads and with fish too. The cuddles are an extra bonus

Kate: Really? Are girls generally smaller than the boys? Yes, I bet she spreads herself out and does the old ‘rabbit kick’ to get herself more room too, doesn’t she?!

  26. Kate says:

She certainly does – accompanied by the ‘there’s no room’ grunt! x

  27. English Mum says:

Kate: Ahaha. Bert’s got so used to hogging the sofa that when we come to sit down he just automatically lifts his head and you just have to slide under his neck and be his pillow!!

  28. I have terrible problems with rabbits (and digging squirrels) They ate a whole crop of onions overnight and they’re not supposed to eat onions. Then they ate the lettuce that the onions were supposed to be protecting. They’ve eaten loads and loads of cheap plants from Lidl too. Do the raised beds help? And the fleecy defenses?

I bought a rabbit screamer but you have to move it around and it doesn’t work on squirrels (which are less problematic but they dig up bulbs in the autumn to store acorns)

  29. Jay says:

The veggies look great, but Bertie looks greater!! Thirty inches at the shoulder? That’s three inches taller than our tallest has been, though I should tell you that Sid is tall too. Hmm. I wonder if he’s a cousin of Bert’s? I’ve forgotten what Bertie’s racing name was though, if I ever knew.

  30. Moon says:

    See, everyone loves Bert ..

    The commentors are revolting …

  31. English Mum says:

EW: Well according to my Dad, rabbits won’t jump or climb, so yes, theoretically. Trouble is, our raised bed is set into a slope so on one side they only have to step up about an inch! Several people have said that anything spicy or fiery like chilli powder, cayenne pepper, etc, sprinkled around works a treat. Have yet to try it but the mesh seems to be working too x

Jay: It was Carrick Will He. Yup, he’s a big fella. He’ll never be muscly again though, he’s too lazy x

    Moon: I know. Heh.

  32. Brighid says:

Wow, your garden patch is doing well. Mine is full up with veggies. Snow peas are done because of the heat, and I’ve just pulled them out to plant something else. Strawberries, carrots, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, swiss chard, squash, and beans are producing well. Have two large pumpkin plants going, courtesy of the blue jays, I’m thinking.
Bert is a cutie, and Maxwell, The Wonder Cowdog, ret., says to tell him hello from the back of beyond California.

  33. Taffy's Mum says:

Friday night, I went over to mums to pick strawberries, redcurrants, logan berries and raspberries. Much nicer than shop bought ones (although you have to check for wrigglies before you eat them!)

  34. English Mum says:

Brighid: Wow, sounds like you’re doing well. My peas didn’t do at all well, and I’m afraid it’s been quite wet so the slugs have had the lettuces! I tried growing pumpkins last year in the greenhouse but managed to kill them both. Maxwell and Bert sound like they could get along well – we should arrange a rendezvous?!

TM: Wow, she has all that fruit already? Just shows you how much warmer it is in the UK than here! I have a couple of measly green strawberries so far…x

  35. English Mum says:

Aw Jen, darling, I just noticed I missed you out. So that’s it, then? I’m doomed to photos of Bert every Friday? You’ll soon be sick of him, I bet x
