A shining star of wonderful gorgeousness

The Friday Photo: The Great Blogger Muffin-off: the results are in

So when I originally commented in a rather rude fashion about SingleParentDad’s use of fairy cake packet mixes, I wasn’t sure he’d take my step-by-step muffin challenge all that seriously.  And then when Laura from Are We Nearly There Yet Mummy (of the self-confessed ‘ovenly challenged’ variety), decided to throw down the gauntlet (or should that be oven glove and challenge him to a full-on ’Muffin off’, I knew we were in for a bit of fun.  Here are the results, then.  First of all, we have SingleParentDad‘s offerings:

SPD's bejewelled beauties

And here are lovely Laura‘s small but beautifully formed chocky chippy wonders:

Laura's lovely buns

Each, as I’m sure you’ll agree, have their own merits.  So now it’s over to you.  Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to visit Laura’s blog (click here) and Single Parent Dad’s blog (click here) (SPD should possibly have points deducted for entitling his offering ‘Muff Munching’ however – not very Disney that, is it), read their full muffin posts, and then decide who is the winner.  This blog will self-destruct in three…two….one….

  1. Well, I have to say SPD’s muffins win hands down although think more points off for thinking his laptop were a set of scales and not very organised cooking space – and possibly another half point for not involving children AND making them all look like breasts (well mine anyway) – I’m thinking my 8 year old might be able to do a better job – might have to set my children the challenge…..Laura!! Your’s are a disgrace!!!

  2. Erica says:

Well.. the..er contrast is more stark with the photos side by side. If I *had* to choose I would most certainly, most definitely, most absolutely say SPD, because let’s be honest Laura’s are pappity pap (sorry Laura, but it’s best to tell the truth eh..well done for trying tho) :)

  3. Jennifer (Bert's No 1 Fan!) says:

Laura gets my vote for pure creativity!!! I loved the pony ha ha ha!!!! :)

    Well done both of you.

  4. English Mum says:

Lulu: Ahaha they do look a bit like breasts – he stopped short of topping them off with a raspberry thank goodness! Maybe we should do a bloggerkids muffin-off, although I know mine would lose x

Erica: Oh dear. I hope Laura’s got her flak jacket on for this one

  5. Laura Driver says:

I am wearing my flak jacket. I can take it. I am happy to stand in the village square and shout “My name is Laura and I am ovenly challenged” before being pelted with baked goods.

I thought you said they looked better blown up. Did you mean with dynamite and not in size?

  6. Erica says:

Thank goodness, didn’t want to upset my coaster buddy :( I’m sure I’ll be showing myself up next week when I attempt them eek.

  7. Maxi Cane says:

Must. Resist. Urge. To. Make. Muffin. Jokes.

I must say though, that I write about muffins quite frequently.

  8. Really not seeing the breast thing, wish I could, but I can’t. Perhaps if could be sent a few photos for comparison?

I am surprised how well they came out, but I did follow your instructions to the letter, and this time I seemed to get the icing sugar locked down.

Thanks for tipping me over the edge into non-packet baking.

Reminds me of the Christmas cakes and homemade beer that I used to make, that is until the novelty wore off and I discovered that the cake ran riot with the hiatus hernia. Anyway I was banned from the kitchen because I didn’t clean up afterwards, can see that SPD would fall into that trap too with the dirty oven. Good fun though I have to say and the homemade beer was crap too, one of those kit efforts btw. Still we live and learn and kids are fun, anyone for Scrabble?

  10. English Mum says:

Jenn: I’m with you – sterling effort. And you’re right – extra points for the pony!

  11. English Mum says:

Laura: Being pelted with baked goods reminds me of American Pie! They do look quite pretty enlarged, don’t you think? x

Erica: Will be retweeting that one

  12. English Mum says:

Maxi: Ah, right on time. Dread to think what kind of muffins get your attention.

SPD: you did a grand job alright. I would send you a couple of breast photos, but I save them all for getting me off parking fines, sorry. And you’re welcome – very entertaining.

TW: Depends – scrabble with kids drives me mental – all that ‘why can’t I have bigjob? It’s a word’ – but you’d know that, being a Grandparent!

  13. Thanetwarrior says:

I don’t know that ‘bigjob’ is better than ‘nojob’ and staying home with the kids instead, just goes to show that you can’t have everything in life. But still you are right about the grandparent bit, all five of them. Now that’s what I call parenting !!!!!!

  14. English Mum says:

    TW: Erm… exactly.

  15. exmoorjane says:

Tough one…..SPD’s are certainly more photogenic but how do they taste? I like Laura’s more earthy quality and the way the tops peek over the er splashing white icing…..

  16. Linda says:

I thought they all looked lovely and I could snaffle the lot. I couldn’t decide between them. SO STICK THAT IN YOUR PIPE AND SMOKE IT.*

    Good day.
    * just trying to keep my comment interesting and didn’t want to say chocolate starfish.

  17. English Mum says:

Jane: See, that’s what I like about you – diplomatic to the very last. ‘Earthy quality’ ahaha

Linda: *You just did. Now I just have to change my underwear. Good day to you too.

  18. I like the fact that one of Laura’s is shaped slightly like a boat.

Bit unfair that SPD has gone for the breasty look – if Laura had known he was doing body parts, she could have hit back with some jumbo sausages.

  19. Yummy Mammy says:

I can not possibly pass comment until I have sampled them. Stick um in the post kiddie winks ;-)

At least nobody made one in the shape of a chocolate starfish LOL

  20. Anouk says:

Hmm I’ll have to vote for SPD. But believe me: if you saw what I baked on Wednesday I would make you cry. Compared to that Linda’s look like heaven.

Off to do some more baking now.

  21. English Mum says:

DD: I like the boat – it complements the little horse. It’s like a little country scene. And again with the sausages? You’re obsessed *tsk*

Mammy: Can you believe Linda? She always lowers the tone. Well Linda and Maxi Cane do anyway.

Anouk: Come on, it wasn’t that bad. Was it? Practice makes perfect – you can send your results to Yummy Mammy!

  22. Jay says:

Can’t I have one of each to taste before making up my mind?

Oh … alright. I’ll trot off to read the blogs.

    *Trots off, muttering*

    LOL!

  23. Linda says:

I’m sorry I am on annual leave.

  24. English Mum says:

Jay: No spelling mistakes? Punctuation? What, I get 10/10? YAY! xx

Linda: The first 8 or so emails kind of gave that away.
