A shining star of wonderful gorgeousness

EM’s Book(ish) Club: Our July Book

Right, so.  Thanks for all your input regarding our June book.  It was really interesting (if somewhat hard work) to read a book I wouldn’t normally have picked, and to see what everyone else thought of it too.  I note that we were all pretty much in the same ball park with our comments.

So, due to popular demand, our July book will be (cue fanfare): The Resurrectionist by James Bradley (sorry about the crap photo, it’s the only one I could find).

Purchased new from Amazon, this book comes in at £3.86, but P&P to Ireland adds a huge £4.98, bringing the total to £8.84 (although in the UK if you go mad and spend £15 you get free delivery – the evil monkeys, they know we will).  The Book Depository comes in at a far more reasonable £5.89 including free worldwide delivery.  Ebay are showing several, but all in the UK and again postage makes Amazon and The Book Depository look a better deal.  However, the winner seems to be Play.com which advertise the book at £3.99 (€5.49!) with free delivery to many European countries (not US or Canada guys, sorry) including Ireland (AND the Vatican!  Wow, I wonder if de Holy Father uses Play.com?).  If anyone has any trouble, email me and I’ll order you a copy and send it on.

My favourite Amazon review is by someone called ‘TonyD’ who said, and I quote ‘this scared the pants off me’.  It was also described by The Telegraph as a ‘classically claustrophobic gothic chiller’, so we certainly didn’t go at all girlie for July did we?!

Anyhoo, read it whilst hiding under the duvet, and we’ll report back at the end of the month for what we do best, a little conflab.  Off ye go, then.

  1. So, I’ll be reading “No Logo” and possibly might manage a chapter of “The fall of the British Empire”.

  2. Mum says:

I’m really looking forward to this…I love a scary book, far better than all the sad ones!

  3. nuttycow says:

A scary book? I was looking forward to a good ol’ bonkbuster. Ah well.

Does play.com take paypal? Only that I have £20 credit in there I want to use up!

  4. Thrifty: Tsk, nonconformist! Naomi Klein? Somewhat heavy for me, but I’ll be interested to see what you think. And as for British history, the nearest I’ll get is reading Bill Bryson’s Shakespeare that my DD sent me (it’s darned good, actually) x

Ma: Me too. Am clearing my bedside table in anticipation!! x

Nutty: Ah sorry – next month?? Not sure about the PayPal – guess you could buy it on Ebay though if you could find a bargain copy??

  5. jennynib says:

Oooh, I love a good scare!

    €5.55 in Eason.com – ker-ching!!

    Bonkbuster? Love it!

    :D

  6. Free worldwide delivery!?!Excellent – do you think that they would include a tub of marmite?

  7. june in florida says:

I recommend Abe books to purchase books, they are worldwide net of book stores, used and new,so you can pick a store in your country and cut down on delivery charges.

  8. Jen: Ooh that’s not a bad price, then?

Bugs: Here they do individual portions (heart shaped) and a new squeezy bottle – shall I send you a food parcel, cherub??

June: Ah well done – I knew you’d have a good suggestion x

  9. Moon says:

Well if you are sending stuff, I need some new shower gel, I like the Imperial Leather squirty stuff out of the can … pink flavour pls, also some decent cheese….

I’ll go buy the book today …. I guess Razzle didn’t make the cut then ?

also, Jen, email me any info you want about Solar !

  10. june in florida says:

Suggestion for MOON.Mother Earth News has a web site, you can peruse the archives and get any info and how to stuff on solar, sod houses gardening, totally anything.

  11. Moon says:

Oh, thanks for that June, always interested in that, re the Solar…. I have the worlds expert married to me, she will end up telling them a thing or two, Mrs M knows her solar !

  12. Moon: Surely they do shower gel in America? Otherwise I expect you’re all a bit stinky. And do you know the environmental impact of those aerosols of pink foam? Bad rabbit.

Ah, well, living in the land of decent cheese, I thoroughly recommend a nice wedge of Cashel Blue….or maybe some mature Wexford cheddar…drool…

June: Ohhh yes, Mrs M’s an expert. I’m planning on asking her about a wind farm for English Towers – no seriously, I really am…

  13. Moon says:

    Who’s wind ??

I had a goos supply when Mum came over, need some more though, just finished the wonderful smoked cheese from Slovakia … send me more now !

also, have you worked on my blog yet, very impatient me !

    Love ya xxxx

  14. Moon: OOh I love smoked cheese – remember that Bavarian one in a sausage shape? Yum. Yes, I’ve gone mad – fiddled with loads of stuff and sent you a big email with lots of how-tos.

    Get bloggin pal!!

  15. Moon says:

    To my dearest Cousin …

THANKS EM…… Love you to bits xxxxxxxxx

    Moon (very, very excited!!!!!) x

  16. Mum says:

This blogging is bad for my health! I get home from work, plough through the emails, then have to read all the blogs/comments etc. Oh, I forgot to say I pour myself a large Pinot first, then if there are too many….well, another. With Moon blogging too now it may well stretch to three – whoopee!

  17. Moon: Welcome. I’ll be partaking seriously in your hospitality come September so it’s only fair.

Ma: Aw me too. I thought I had it all sussed by subscribing to everyone’s feeds, but they don’t seem to update – I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong…(Thrifty???) BTW Up in Enniskillen Tesco they have GIANT bottles of Pinot for £5.99 (double size!!) x

  18. Mum says:

Yes, my love, and you get 25% off if you buy 6 bottles…just ask the expert…

  19. Wee Jen says:

Oooh – love gothic and scary. Am well up for that. Other books in the pile at the moment (cos I have the attention span of a nat) include ‘We Have Always Lived in the Castle’, ‘Rome Burning’ and a big pile of cookbooks. Lots of fun!

  20. Baino says:

OK! We’re off and away! I’m really going to attempt more than three chapters this time otherwise I’ll have four books on my bedside table in varying states of ‘unread’

  21. EM: I really like the big tub that you get from Costco, although I am told that Marmite tastes better from a glass jar. I would also like some cheese please, Mr, DBM loves Wensleydale, me, I like cheddar, lots of lovely cheddar mmmmmmmmm, drooling on my keyboard. Looks like it might be time for a trip back across the pond. Need more holiday …… Need more money …….

Moon: Now, when you “Who’s wind?” and then follow that by saying “I had a good supply when Mum came over…” it really does make it sound as though Mum had a lot of “wind” while she was there. Now, I know that she might suffer from that affliction, just a bit, but you really don’t have to tell the whole world.

  22. Aidan says:

I’ll add this book to my pile. I hope that it is no more than 300 pages though because I can do one of those in a regular week. On holidays on the other hand I can read for Ireland…

  23. Ma: You’re such a bad influence

Jen: Oooh, I seriously fancy that ‘We Have Always Lived in the Castle’ another gothic scary one – might have to clear some of my cookbooks off the bedside table too though!! x

Baino: Yay! Well, we’ve got the whole month so hopefully we’ll manage to fit it in x

DBM: Is nothing sacred? Now we’re discussing Auntie A’s flatulence problem! (Does she read this? She’ll kill me for that!). Okay, Marmite and cheese emergency parcels then. I can cope with that x

Aidan: Me too. Trouble is, I tend to have three or four on the go at once and sometimes have to reread bits. It’s an afflication my oldest son has inherited – books by the loo, books left in the garden, books everywhere!

  24. Ruth E says:

I’m really sucky and didn’t read last months. Won’t be able to read this months so here’s hoping i get next month’s one!

  25. English Mum says:

Ruth: No pressure – we’re a friendly, only if you fancy it kind of book club x
