So Hubby being a bit of a waterskiing freak, another of our many new friends from the village, the lovely C (yes, another C - so inconvenient that they all have the same initial!) invited us out to one of Cavan’s many beautiful loughs to have a go on his new boat and for Hubby to suss out whether it’ll be suitable for skiing.

Well.  The boat was amazing, the sun shone, the lough glistened and glimmered, a bizarre troupe of donkeys came to check out what we were up to… and the most amazing day was had by all.  Seriously, dearest reader, I cannot tell you just how beautiful this country is.  If you ever get a spare weekend, head up to Cavan.  You won’t regret it.

My own personal highlight was laughing until I nearly wet my pants at #2’s grimly determined face as C tried his very best to throw him from the ‘donut’ being towed from the back of the boat.  Sadly this shot of #1 on the donut (also bedwettingly hilarious) was taken on Hubby’s mobile as he sat precariously perched on the front of the boat.  Apologies for the crap quality.

Oh and skiing is definitely on the cards.  Humiliating pictures will no doubt follow.

  1. Ah, my uncle tried to get me to water-ski once. I kept falling and forgetting to let go, turning me into a drowning torpedo dragged along after the boat with a big bow wave over my head. Think I drank a good deal of the Shannon that day.

  2. Thrifty: Thriftypedo lol! Hmm…I have to say I’m not a good student either. I get up, fall down, get up, fall down so much usually the boat runs out of petrol before I get a good go!

  4. It does look like a lot of fun. Providing I get to have said fun from the comfort of the boat, clutching a nice mug of hot chocolate!

I don’t do the drowning thing. Not if I can help it.

  5. Well, EM, at least you did get up. I couldn’t even do that and spent alot of time being dragged behind the boat on my arse. The one time that I did nearly get up, my legs decided to go in different directions - a very unpleasant and painful experience. I have not been since!

  7. Tara: Come join the fun! Seriously, people always think of visiting Waterford (which is beautiful by the way), Kerry or Donegal, for instance, but lovely old Cavan gets left out. It’s kind of the Lake District of Southern Ireland. Amazing x

Jay: Yup, that’s exactly where I was. Nice and warm on the boat! x

DBM: Ouch. Funnily enough I was fine on the lake, but when we tried on the sea in St Lucia I didn’t get up once - just drank gallons of sea water, felt sick and headed off to the bar instead!

June: Deadly, deadly cold. My little lads were blue and shivering afterwards, even in the sun!x

  8. Oooh - flashbacks to ‘teambuilding’ day out when we had to have a go at the ‘fun’ activity of waterski-ing (on Loch Lomond, very cold, even in July). I never managed to get up on my legs in the water and couldn’t figured out how this was supposed to help bring our team closer together…

The donut looks like a lot more fun though :-) I’d definitely have a go.

  9. Visiting from the Antipodes and identifying WHOLLY with Don’tBugme. Very embarrassing in front of a bunch of nubile nymphettes who fly by on one ski! Water looks a bit chilly . . I’d be happy to be the spotter!

I have a friend in Cavan and he’s always disparaging about it. Looks just fine to me!

    PS: Nice doggie!

  12. Jen: Hmmm teambuilding days. I remember those. When I was on the YTS we did a week in the Black Mountains in Wales - potholing and the like. Hideous. Yep, donut was deadly, especially when he really swerved it round to knock them off. SOOOO funny!!

Baino: Blimey, we’re not worthy! Welcome to the gang. Yeh, I was deffo the chief spotter - not keen on 50 foot of green nothing underneath me! Yes, honestly, Cavan’s fab. Unless you like shopping. Or Broadband. But hey, one can’t have everything. Oh and thanks, Bert’s developing quite a fanclub! xx

Nutty: Welcome again! Where are you based? Yeh, it’s closed in now - back to grey and dreary again. x

Nats: Yes it was fab. And I’m not really that outdoorsy but I loved it. How was your week away by the way? x

  14. Ruth: A lot of the loughs do this sort of thing pay by the hour - not sure if there’s any of that up your way?? Great laugh though. I’m on at Hubby (unsuccessfully, natch) about buying a boat now x

  17. Colm: It was really bad, wasn’t it. I noticed that the flashy new house down the boat road had water lapping at its back door after the lough burst its banks. Bet they were crapping themselves!
