May

So Hubby’s back then (wehay!!).  He’s gobsmacked by the glorious weather and by the changes everywhere - everything seems so green and lush.  Our new trees have fresh green leaves and our painstakingly planted beech hedge has changed from rusty brown to glowing limey green.

We had a laugh last night as D next door has got a ride-on lawnmower and the two fellas (as they do) thought it would be a laugh to train the kids to cut the lawn while they sat back and watched.  As I worried and called ‘ooh, be careful!’ the children took turns to mow the lawn.  Lou was very good at it, making perfect cricket stripes.  Little C couldn’t be bothered to have a go, #1 didn’t bother cutting anything but just charged around (well, as much as you can charge at 5kph) pretending to be Jensen Button going ‘woo hoo!’ and #2 narrowly missed mowing down both Hubby and one of my bloody Silver Birches and was ordered to get off.

That done, we retired to our rather pretty looking patio (I’ve just potted up a load of terracotta pots with thyme, basil and mint), overlooking the empty field (cows arriving shortly, I’m assured) and downed a couple of cold glasses of white wine whilst dreaming of our next holiday.  We discussed holidays past (Goa - beautiful, peaceful, gorgeous beaches, wonderful people), holidays planned (Canada to annoy Bugs, USA to annoy Moon and Australia (definitely a possibility) and our dream holidays (Seychelles, cruising the Caribbean, Kenyan safari).

What about you lot, then.  Holidays past/holidays booked/dream holidays?

  1. Italy. June 1st for two weeks. Rome for a week and then Riva. I’m hanging on by my fingernails for a bit of time off, sunshine and good food. (Although I know that’s a bit rich, seeing as I was just in NY, but that was mostly for work and I’ve been rewarded for any time taken off with… more work.)

Dream holidays… Would love to go back to Australia for an extended visit… Get a camper van and take a couple of months going around Italy… Do the same in New Zealand… Visit San Fran… Africa - I’ve never been and would love to. Belarus is where my grandparents came from, so that would be interesting…

  2. Wee One: Ah yes, Italy. I’d love to do Milan and Rome but Hubby’s not a city person. Still, a villa in Tuscany would be fahbilis.

Oh, did you love Australia? I’m desperate to go. And New Zealand too. Moon LOVED San Fran, we’ll have to get him to tell us all about it. And you must go to Belarus. I’m ashamed to say I had to look it up on a map! Wouldn’t it be great to visit though?

  3. Ah, New Zealand is fabulous .. so beautiful and so uncrowded!

For us this year it’s the US again. Vegas, the Grand Canyon, LA, San Fransciso and home. I’m indulging in a nice little Depp-fest with the girls in LA while OH goes off and does his own thing for a few days, but we’re fitting in a trail ride too, which will be just lovely on those comfy big saddles and stuff. Neither of us do the beach thing. I like them to walk on in the early morning or evening, otherwise, forget it!

  4. Been to India, Japan and Hong Kong. Thinking of Beijing, but after the olympics, some friends of our moved their lately and would put us up. Need to get skiing again (only been 1 and a half times but loved it, now sprogs old enough). Aus and NZ would be cool, but we’ll see. I go now, sinuses filled with the snot of satan.

  5. It would be great - although the family sleuth has discovered that we’re from somewhere around Chernobyl… That would be extremely interesting.

  6. Best Holiday: Milan, without a doubt! Prada shop, I love thee.

Dream Holiday: Japan, although C has vetoed this in favour of the House of Pain, New Zealand.

  7. August 30th - South America, here I come. Peru and the Inca Trail, Bolivia and Lake Titicaca (and, yes, I said Titi!), Brazil and Iguazu Falls, Patagonia and Ushuaia and, to cap it all, two weeks in the Galapagos - lizards, tortoises, finches, boobies (no comments on that one, please), and lots and lots of lovely hammerhead sharks, hopefully. Just imagine four months worth of blogs and photos…….
Favourite holiday destination so far? Hard choice, but I would have to go for Australia, snakes, spiders, crocodiles and all.

  8. Ooooh, no wait - Southern Africa - I loved it there. Lots of dangerous animals - you certainly couldn’t just nip into the bushes for a quick pee there….

  9. That sounds like fun!! :) And when I see any commentor mention South Africa I can’t help but smile…it’s a wilderness here! ;)

  10. I have just had my week in Las Vegas - we’ve been before so we took it easy seeing what we missed last time. There was lots of gambling on the slot machines whilst drinking cocktails and trying to win our millions! Then whilst the footy was on (11am in the morning there) and OH was getting drunk with a load of Liverpool fans, I was reading a book by the pool - my kind of holiday!

Other than that it will be a trip to France to see the out-laws in the summer hols!

And I so love our beech hedges, they are in their most glorious green just now, but I love them in the winter too, that wonderful rust colour.

  13. Jay: #1 has a friend who moved to NZ. Would love to visit. We’re all a family of total beach bums I’m afraid. I do a teeny bit of sightseeing and Hubby likes to water ski but otherwise we’re just making dents in the sand! Would love to do the horse riding though x

Thrifty: LOVE India - can’t wait to go back. Sorry to hear you’re snot ridden still, petal xx

    Wee One: Chernobyl? Hmmm…

Jen: What’s the House of Pain? Sounds like an S&M holiday to me. Oh, but you’re welcome to go back to Prada - especially if I get another present :0)

    Bugs: Ha. You said boobie.

You’re far too bloody adventurous you and Mr DBM. Would love a full-on action packed adventure holiday though I’d have to leave Hubby by the pool with a 6 pack. Lol xx

Sleepy: Aw, Nats says it’s beautiful there. Maybe you could show us around??!

TM: Ooh lubly! Forgot about France. I love Brittany - spent many a happy holiday on the beach and in the lovely restaurants x

Mary: Aren’t they gorgeous? And we’ve got a few surprise copper ones in with all the greenies. Must take a pic x

Nats: Never been to America - would LOVE to see Boston. Wasn’t it Thrifty that said it was awesome? And Surrey? Erm…okay then, if you must!

    Comment by englishmuminireland — May 14, 2008 @ 1:40 pm

  14. We have two huge copper beeches in our garden.
Some years ago when some forester friends came to sort out out trees they were about to chop them down until we stopped them, on the whole foresters hate them! But I love them.

  16. My favourite holiday was to Italy. I haven’t wanted to go on holidays since I moved to where I am now, its a beautiful part of Oz (I’m picking up some picks to tempt you over English Mum! Everyone should come to Oz :). But of all things, I’d like to visit Ireland.

    Comment by Coastal Aussie — May 15, 2008 @ 2:25 am

  17. Mary: Ah, I love them too - glad to hear you’re a fellow tree lover. The willow that we planted down by the road is still tiny, but full of new leaves - I finally feel like all my trees are growing!

Jen: Oh! What a strange name. I think C might even prefer my suggestion!! x

Aussie: Desperate to go to Italy. Are you from Oz originally then? And yes, mi casa es su casa if you ever feel like taking the trip!! x

  18. Is that offer open to everyone?

    Can we bring greyhounds? ;)

    Comment by Taffy's Mum — May 15, 2008 @ 8:23 am

  19. Funny enough I would love London. It’s what happens when you spend life in the states swearing you’re truly an English person on the inside. :)

But, I wouls also say a tour of Greece would be lovely, too!

    Comment by Penelope — May 15, 2008 @ 12:54 pm

  20. TM: Come on over! I’ve got my patio set out as we speak!! Greyhounds most welcome xx

Penelope: Welcome, welcome, welcome! Pull up a chaise longue. Ooh yes, Greece. Remember Captain Corelli’s Mandolin? Wasn’t that Kefalonia (or however you spell it?). Wondrous…all turquoise and white. Oh and London? Well, you can’t beat it, really x

    Comment by Moon — May 16, 2008 @ 2:38 pm

  25. TM: Bless him. I’ve got no sympathy for him, though, swanning about the states in a suit!!

Moon: Ooh yes please! We’d drive you all bonkers - #1 would be drooling over the cars and #2 would be trying to drown himself in the sea by surfing or some such dangerous activity!! x

    Comment by englishmuminireland — May 16, 2008 @ 4:09 pm

  26. Thanks English Mum ! I’d love that. Italy is glorious and the Greek Islands were my second best holiday. I like to see New York City too, but I’m daunted by its size and fast pace. Yep, despite my Irish name and a family tree that’d be balder than your Bertie’s bum if you shook out the Irish, I am fully Australian. :) I originally started reading blogs ’cause I wanted to know what Ireland is like. X
