Groan…

Yesterday, then, I had a teensy hangover (thanks Jen), which was surprising really as although we probably drank a couple of bottles, we did it over several hours and with vast, bucket-loads, nay, shed-loads of food.  Still, I woke up a little headachey and decided, in that time-honoured tradition of the hungover who trawl the fridge the morning after the night before, that we should make pancakes.  And furthermore that while I was making pancakes I should eat half a Chocolate Orange egg that Hubby bought me.  The children went off to the GAA pitch with D next door (handy chap that he is) to play in the annual Easter gaelic football competition, and Hubby and I settled in with a cup of tea and the other half of the egg.  Then we decided we needed a bit of fresh air, so we wandered down to watch the matches, taking full advantage of the free tea and biscuits on offer.  On our return, I stuffed down a rather yummy leftover beef, rocket, tomato and mayo sandwich, along with a packet of crisps, then started on Hubby’s Toblerone egg too.  At which point, D arrived for a cup of tea, so I felt obliged to open the other Toblerone bar and share it with him.

For some reason, we didn’t feel like any supper, but then at 9.30 I decided I really needed two rounds of marmite on toast, another cup of tea and a few of the truffles out of the Thorntons egg that Jen bought me.  Honestly.  I feel sick just reading it.

Why is it that I eat like a total gannet after any form of alcohol abuse?  Slightly adding insult to injury, methinks.  Just the one tonight, then, Mrs Wembley.

My friend swears by Irn Bru as the mother of all hangover cures. Another one said a fried egg sandwich before going to sleep did the trick (hmmmmmm - frying food when paralytically drunk, nothing could go wrong there…). My husband, annoyingly, doesn’t suffer from hangovers. Ever. It’s enough to warrant divorce! Me, I crave a sugar/savoury combination when wincing at the strong daylight and loud noises, so I go down the root of a disgustingly strong cup of tea or a hot chocolate and a packet of salt and vinegar crisps.

Dearest Cous …… I haven’t seen you for a while now … but please do not tell me you have now grown to the size of your average American ?????? I am hoping Bert gives you the exercise to burn this off …..

Daughter, what have I always drummed into you - do as I SAY, not as I DO!! Never, never over-indulge, whether it be wine, chocolate, crisps and peanuts, or ham, cheese & mushroom toasties [with real butter, natch] - my mum was a treasure, but why didn’t she warn me of the dangers of overeating!!

Jen: That’s SO weird. I love that weird savoury/sweet combination as well. Pancakes with bacon and syrup does the trick, or chocolate and ready salted crisps. I really think the biggest problem was that I didn’t force down a pint of water before bedtime. Hence dehydration and odd food cravings. Heh.

Thrifty: Marmite ROCKS! My Ma had Aussie lodgers a while back and I tried their Vegemite. Ew.

Moon: Nah, I still look exactly the same, don’t worry. And yes, trudging up and down the boat road every day dragging a lazy, lanky bastard has given me buns of steel. Ish.

Mother: You are a teensy weensy little scrap. I very much doubt you’ll ever suffer from overeating. But oooh…wine and peanuts… Ooh, or cashews and wine, ooh, ham, cheese and mushroom toasties…slurp… Just off to the fridge. Back soon xx

All you needed was a “waffer thin” mint to complete the picture.

Mmmmm MARMITE: You either love it or hate it!

Marmite and Salad Cream (or Mayo) on toast is a particular favourite of mine!

EM: I have to agree with you, vegemite is no substitute for marmite (I took my own pot of Marmite on a trip to Australia!)

I used to have Marmite, Port salut cheese and honey on crackers when I was small. It was good, but did it to freak out my gran as much as anything.

June: Ooh condensed milk. Especially boiled then used for Banoffee. Yum.

    73: Indeed. Mrs Creosote, moi.

TM: Oh, mayo, that’s another obsession of mine. We had a mate of #2’s to stay who had chocolate spread and mayo sandwiches. I’d draw the line there though.

Thrifty: You always make me hungry. Cheese is the ideal sweet/savoury thing though - remember deep fried brie and gooseberry jam? I know it’s passé but I still love it xx
