ENGLISH MUM IN THE PRESS

Let it snow and Limoncello (ooh that rhymes)

Oh the weather outside is frightful,
But the fire is so delightful,
And since we’ve no place to go,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

So okay, I kind of promised myself that I wouldn’t do anything vaguely Christmassy (apart from talk about shopping, natch) until 1st December, but I’m thinking that this beautiful e-snow (thanks a-plenty to our resident internerd, Grandad!) is more wintery than actually Christmassy, so it’s okay.

Just a heads-up, this week at English Towers we will be mostly making… Limoncello! (takes a month to get gorgeous, so we need to get going) and biscotti (which don’t need to be made in advance, but I want to fiddle with the recipe so it’s perfect to serve with the Limoncello at Christmas).  So get thee to SuperValu (or wherever) and pick up 6 of the biggest, fattest, glossiest lemons and a 70cl bottle of any-old-brand vodka in anticipation.  Oh and if you happen upon some kind of really decorative bottle, maybe with one of those Grolsch-type swing-top corks, so much the better.  (See what I did there?  Drawing you in with a tantalising little snippet of things to come).  It’ll be worth it, I promise.

30 days to go, people!!

  1. Oh! I see the snow! It’s beautiful…(we’ve just had our own sort of snow – hail :) I will get the ingredients, I’ve always wanted to make lemoncello. :)

  2. English Mum says:

Aussie: You have hail? I always imagine you lot wafting around in shorts and t-shirts in the heat! Yup, I’m going shopping today to hunt for a beautiful bottle to put mine in x

  3. If I wore shorts and T-shirt most days in Tasmania, I’d expect a slap and someone to tell me not to be so silly! It’s freezing here!

  4. English Mum says:

Miles: Seriously stop. You’re shattering all my illusions! I thought you lot all had Christmas day on the beach, throwing a couple of shrimps on the barbie, etc… No?

  5. Mmmmmmmm Limoncello [homer drool noise]

  6. Kate says:

count me in – I’ll get the indredients on the way home from work tonight – nice snow! x

  7. Jennifer (Bert's No 1 Fan!) says:

I’ve never ever heard of Limoncello. What exactly is it, a drink of some kind?

Luuurving your snow and usually I’m well up for starting Christmas early but this year I just cannot get into mindset until I have my “summer” holiday.

In 5 days time I shall be lying by the pool with pina colada in hand…ahh bliss :)

  8. Maxi Cane says:

    Homemade alcohol?

Do I have to leave jars of pee fermenting under a radiator again?

  9. Kate says:

Oh Maxie – I think you’ve just put me off!!!

  10. Aidy says:

    Ahhh, christmas, just cant wait

  11. English Mum says:

Thrifty: I know. Not sure if I’ll last the month it takes to make it ;)

Kate: Why thank you. Festive innit. I hope you caught the fact that I put 750ml and it’s actually a 70cl bottle that you need. Sorry. x

Jenn: Aw stop rubbing it in. You lucky girly!! What a great time to go – where you going? Yep, it’s a lurvely Italian lemon liqueur. This is a cheat’s version but it disappears every time we make it x

Maxi: Aw bleurgh. You’re gross, but I still lub you x

    Kate: Seconded. Heh.

Aideeeeee!!!! Where ye bin? Me too. Lots of Chrimbo shopping to be done, but I’m feeling all Christmassy already x

  12. wee jen says:

Love limoncello (hic). Used to get a free shot at the local Italian near my old flat – those were the days… Then we saw them making it in Amalfi when we were on honeymoon – a whole shop that just smelled like lemons with big vats of alchol everywhere. Cor. Took some restraint to stop myself diving in head first ;-)

  13. wee jen says:

Aw crap! I don’t know why I’m still blacked out on my avatar ‘cos I’m logged in at the mo’. Ah well. I just get to be all mysterious and whatnot.

  14. Moon says:

Christmas my arse … it’s still Nov !!!!, we have Thanksgiving first !!!

I’ll get into the spirit once we get back from New York, then we will join in ..

We get two Chrimbo days btw .. !!!

  15. Homemade limoncello!!! who woulda thunk??? great idea for the holidays… I usually cheat with regular limoncello….but homemade sounds like a great tradition to start!
    peace, mw

  16. Baino says:

Ooh . .Love the stuff. Clare bought little bottles home from Italy a couple of years ago but they were nowhere near big enough . . .you will post the recipe? We’ll be sitting in the heat drinking Mango Daquiries and Caiparoska! But Limoncello on ice sounds just as good.

  17. Jay says:

I only see a tiny teeny bit of snow.. just a couple of flakes every thirty seconds or so. Is that what it’s supposed to look like? And what the heck is Limoncello?

  18. SUSAN B says:

EM – here’s a very interesting thread on some sort of forum about making limoncello various ways! I’ll never get around to making it but it sure sounds good!

This day next month is Christmas Eve!!!!! Sounds scarier than 30 days!!!!!

By the way I booked it!

    talk soon

  20. English Mum says:

Wee One: Yes you’re still blacked out and it isn’t even Halloween any more! Ooh yes, I’m looking forward to dipping my biscotti in my limoncello (ooer, that sounded a bit rude!) x

Moon: I specifically said WINTERY I’ll remind you. Ooh, you going to New York? Do tell…! x

Mike the Waiter? Cool, I’m not worthy! Yup, I’m sure it’s not exactly like the real thing, but it’s very nice and dead easy to make. Oh, and welcome.

Baino: One of these days I’m definitely going to sit in the sun on Christmas day. Mango Daiquiris sound good to me. Yup, I’ll be posting the recipe this week.

Jay: Er no, they should be falling down pretty constantly. Limoncello’s a nice lemony Italian liqueur – yummy in little shot glasses *droool* x

Susan: Ooh lovely thanks, I’ll go and have a read. I’ve just seen another recipe that uses Grappa too.

  21. English Mum says:

MRS LOVELY!!!! Everyone, say hello to Mrs Lovely. You finally left a comment…welcome! Good grief, is it really? I really need to get shopping! Ooh well done – at least there’ll be five people at my blessing then! x

  22. Moon says:

mainly for business to be honest, and up to Maine to my head office, but Mrs M also has two business calls to make in Boston, so we are stopping over in NYC for a long week-end, she has never been before, and means we get to see NYC pre Christmas … should be good !

  23. Jennifer (Bert's No 1 Fan!) says:

    Helloooo Mrs Lovely!!!!

Myself and the hubby are off to Lanzarote EM, it’s our 5th wedding anniversary so I thought it’d be nice to spend it lounging around on the beach :)

  24. Jennifer (Bert's No 1 Fan!) says:

Moon – NYC pre Christmas is the BEST, very magical. Went there for our honeymoon. Unfortunately it was minus 5 degs and hubby got the flu, so check the weather and wrap up warm!

  25. English Mum says:

Moon: Aw, sounds lovely though, New York just before Christmas. The Disreputable One went and said it was unforgettable. x

Jenn: Lanzarote – lovely! You lot are so lucky x

  26. Ben says:

I think this is the hardest time of year to make limoncello but I love that everyone is into it around Christmas.

  27. English Mum says:

Ben: I can’t believe you have a limoncello blog! I’m popping over to have a shufty.
